What Motivates You to Lift Weights?

Catharsis! (my general mood and energy levels & resilience are so much much better when I train) + I love being strong and getting stronger + I like the way it makes my shoulders etc look + I eat better while I’m into traiing. Catharsis is by far the main reason though.

When I graduated high school I was 125lbs soaking wet @ 5’6”. I was always one of the smallest guys in my class. Although I could run fast the football coach wouldn’t let me play for fear of my health. He was also my track coach so he wanted me to focus on that.
About 10 years after high school I met my wife who was into fitness and took me to her gym and I was so embarrassed that she was stronger than I.
After that I joined and started working out and reading everything I could find on weight training and nutrition. Fast forward 32 years and I’m still a small guy but at 165lbs I’m ok considering where I started and my wife tries to take all the credit but at least I’m much stronger than her now.

Yep she was benching 155 for reps. I tried 95lbs only to have it come crashing down but she saved me with a just in time spot. She would joke later that I was a pirates dream, a sunken chest!

You are correct. I usually ignore it but he sticks his oar in everywhere. Genuinely puts me off from posting, sensible discussion goes out the window.

I have my reasons. One being a rather touchy one. Which I’d rather not dispel here, however, anyone is free to look at my logs and quickly understand why.

At one point in time it was all about powerlifting and just hitting PRs, but now it’s morphed to not only hitting PRs, but also just being there, in the gym, during the training. Being mentally present. Through the emotions, be they good, or bad.

Even with a few injuries, here and there, I feel great. I like seeing the results of doing this day In and day out, year after year. Sometimes it’s awesome to look back at progress, sometimes it’s rather mundane. I by no means am the strongest woman walking around, but I’m stronger than I ever imagined myself being years ago. And not only that, but I like comparing training to my recovery. I may have days where I’m not taking either seriously, My emotions are everywhere, I’m confused, I’m frustrated, I’m exhausted, I’m beat up and tired, but so long as I haven’t mentally given up, my body will do whatever My head tells it to. If I give up, my body will too, if I make the conscious decision to show up and get shit done, then my body will follow.

As I wrote in my training diary, even as a young I loved to train with weights. After graduating from my higher education I stopped all physical activity. I smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol. I said I had to improve something.Three years ago, I started lifting weights again. I basically do it to improve my health and appearance. I can’t say I’m trying too hard, I’m 46 years old and I’m avoiding putting too much effort into the tough moves like squat and DL. I do these exercises because they are useful.
I like the bodybuilding style training, although maybe training for strength brings more benefits. But at my age, I don’t have to overdo it. I can’t compete with other people my age who haven’t stopped practicing all their lives. That’s why I have to approach smarter.
By the way I am a hyperhypertensive and many people say not to train with weights. Others give advice to train with weights. But when I started practicing with weights, my blood pressure improved. And I feel much better and more in good condition.

I started because mainly i enjoyed it and wanted to look better.

Now almost 10 years later i don’t have motivation apart from day i get to set new Rep Maxes or Max efforts, its routine , and on the days i really don’t feel like going i force myself because i know that if i don’t do it, ill feel even worse about myself . Plus, I’ve found 9/10 when i don’t feel like going and i force myself i end up having some of the best sessions!

Gotta say good on you for keeping at it … being humble and pushing through isn’t easy man … not to mention with something like lifting … it takes a while to build up strength after the initial newbie gains.

Biggest reason is the mental strength it builds. Struggled with anxiety and self esteem issues (like 90% of people do) until I started training. I originally started because I wanted a 6-pack…lost interest in that pretty quickly and just wanted to get strong. For the last 2 or so years I’ve worked on being all-around more useful and harder to kill than a common man. In order, my priorities are health, strength, athleticism, and aesthetics. I’m going heavier this cycle though and forgot how much fun it is to lift weights that make you a little nervous.
