What Is the Fate of the Dollar?

Countries around the globe are hastening to cheapen their currency, in a replay of the trade wars of the early 1930’s. Will this mean the end of the dollar? The end of paper money?
Thoughts?

Kompis, du maste ga pa fler engelska-lektioner!

Good topic! I’ve noticed that the dollar is in free-fall versus the Swedish krona, which is terrible for exports, but good for me.
HH, there is no “end” of the dollar. Huge national debt, foreclosure fiasco that seems to at times empower the banks, at other times discredit them. The market is a mess. But still, the dollar survives while Wall Street resists regulation.

The dollar is down 11% over the past 2 months but is about where it was (vis a vis the basket of currencies) 3 years ago.

The Middle Eastern countries sell us oil for dollars and they are getting paid in a currency that is falling in relative value. Maybe they should want to be paid in Euros or Yen.

Watch for the day that they want to be paid in Renmibi (China)! What a day on the markets that will be! Can we say Dow 5,000? Gold $10,000?

HH, how do you think gold will be affected if OPEC is successful in overthrowing the current money system in favor of an oil based currency?

Gold would get crud all over it from people trying to burn it in their gas tanks.

That’s a big maybe, HH. Euro/yen fluctuate heavily in value too, in fact, the Euro is the most volatile of the major currencies.
oil-producing nations are linked to the dollar, that is the way they want it to be.

Saudi-Arabia would never dump the dollar, they benefit too much from it in the long-run.

People will flee from dollars in order to get whatever the oil sellers are accepting in payment for their oil. My guess is that they will want Renmibi and/or gold in payment for their oil.

The dollar will collapse and gold will go absolutely parabolic. If things get really bad (as in Zimbabwe bad), no one will trade dollars for gold at any price. The dollar will become toilet paper.

Protect your savings! Buy gold or esspecially silver. Oil stocks will probably soar beyond belief too as people flee dollars. If you fear buying gold, buy Exxon and Chevron.

Noone is going to read this little gem so I while just post this part:

30 years later the Germans are making money off of China, and China is making big time money off of us. One thing I really try to get across in the book: Many Americans think that we’ve got a trade deficit because we can’t compete with China. We’ve got a trade deficit because we can’t compete with Germany in selling things to China. Until people wake up and look at the kinds of things that the Germans are doing to keep their manufacturing base, we’re going to continue to run deficits which leave us in the clutches of foreign creditors and compromise our autonomy as a country.

And Germany is outcompeting the US on the world market with 6 weeks of holiday each year, enormous labor costs and bureaucratic rules that can make it a nightmare to open a business.

But I guess it is all the illegal aliens fault.

That is a very good point. Their intellectual property development is absolutely top notch.

Some of their manufacturing/production machinery can not be matched, and the only place you can get it is from German companies, based in and made in Germany.

There are just certain things that you cannot beat, and German precision engineering, manufacturing, and optical devices are that way.

I used to get red faced and throwing tools type of pissed off when the company I worked for would get a shipment of machines that we designed, but had manufactured in Poland would come in completely fucked up and utterly worthless. They had no quality control what so ever. Last straw was when an entire order of 36 machines came in, none of which worked. It might as well have been a couple of pallets of random parts, stuffed in boxes and labeled as such.

We beat ourselves with stupid moves like that. Germany doesn’t seem to have that problem.

It is worse than the alternative of free markets and ultimately unsustainable, but other than that…

With the demographic development in Germany and the fact that the nearly doubled the numbert of public servants in the seventies they have already derailed the systems, just in a less irresponsible way than it is done in the US.
