What is Canada Like?

Good freaking God. Don’t even know where to begin. Actually, that’s a bit dramatic. You only made two points, so I’ll address them in order. There, that was easy…

1.) This is frequently perpetuated bullshit. Do you really believe that if the USA vanished that Canada would suddenly be under attack? That the world is just waiting to pounce on us like that wimpy kid in the schoolyard named “Myron”, but are holding back because of “Bruno”, the freakishly muscular and somewhat dimwitted tough kid who has taken a liking to us for some reason?

You can’t honestly believe this. Please, tell us in detail what would happen to Canada if the US disappeared.

2.) Leaves ASAP? Please cite references here.

IMO you’d find a more marked difference between someone who lives in a small town vs. a huge city, in ANY country, but if pressed to list differences between Canadians and Americans I’d say…

1.) Canadians, overall, feel connected to nature to some degree. Most people, even in big cities, feel the need to go hiking or camping at least a couple times a year.

2.) As mentioned, a source of national pride seems to be listing the ways we differ from the States. I always hated the “I AM CANADIAN” beer commercials. We’ve accomplished enough on our own not to gain identity by contrasting ourselves to the states. Contrary to popular belief most Americans are not moonshine-swigging rubes who think we live in the Ice Caves of Hoth.

3.) Canadian Macrobrew > American Macrobrew. American Microbrew > Canadian Microbrew.

4.) Canadians can sometimes be ignorantly smug about things they shouldn’t be. I cringe when Canuck ex-pats overseas talk about our “flawless environmental record” (Ack!) and speak about our Healthcare system as though it’s the only one of its kind in the world (LOL!)

5.) “Eh” is used widely, but where the hell did the “Aboot” thing come from? [/quote]
It’s aboot time you realized thats why we deported yer ASS to Karate land. As for you US Americans I dare you to try and invade us-we will be waiting with our lacrosse sticks, hockey pucks, canoes, round bacon and Celine Dion albums,eh-you moonshine swigging rubes

  1. I obviously can’t speculate what would happen to Canada if the USA disappeared. There are many belligerant countries in this world that would happily invade, given time and inclination. Anyone who doesn’t think so has never traveled beyond the womb of developed countries.

  2. Cite references? I guess you think the USA holds Japan, Germany, Italy, and Austria as vassal states? All that tribute they pay to Washington? How the Emporer of Japan serves at the pleasure of Congress? How the Panama Canal is operated by the USA?

Pfft.

At most, some isolated spot is taken and used as a base. Okinawa excepted, the fight is usually locals begging the American military to stay because they support the local economy.

And I am not American, BTW.

You can’t speculate, yet you say we’re able to enjoy the “luxury” of being pacifists because of our strong neighbour to the south? As far as I know the US has never stood up for Canada in the face of an international threat. Quite the opposite actually, per capita we’re taking heavier losses in Afghanistan than any other country. The idea that we’re able to enjoy peace because of America “being there” is pure speculation.

Leaving military bases in a country you’ve conquered is NOT vacating the country. Whether the locals like them or not is irrelevant, they serve as a monument saying “America was here”.

You’re right about the Okinawans though…by in large they hate the US bases there. It was odd to see such kind, friendly people sometimes wearing shirts that said “America: Get the fuck off our island!”.

For realz? SO when you look on a map you don’t see a distinct NORTH America and SOUTH America? Jesus you’re dense aren’t ya

Here, let me speak to you as if you’re a toddler, maybe you’ll understand:

There are TWO separate continents with the title “America” … there’s a North and South America. ALL people coming from NORTH American are from the North American continent and could be labeled as NORTH AMERICANS, just as peoples living on the SOUTH American continent can be labeled as SOUTH AMERICANS. However, there is this thing called diversity and most people prefer to be identified with their national origin RATHER THAN their continental origin.

For the sake of making this as short and easy to follow as possible, and for the sake of this discussion, I’ll keep this focused on the North American continent. There are 3 separate nations that make up this continent and each nation has it’s own distinct culture that has evolved over the centuries: Canada, The United States of America, and Mexico.
