Maybe it’s partly psychological. Holding my breath gives me assurance that I’m still in control of something, or that it gives me something to do while I’m waiting to wake up. I’m also thinking that it would “force” me to wake up because I’m deliberately cutting my oxygen supply, causing my body to panic to a degree.
