What Does Coffee Do?

As title really.

I hear a few people say that coffee is good for “building muscle” and I’d like to know why and how from people who are actually well informed (i.e. you lot).

The closest thing coffee does to help build muscle is wake you up before you go to the gym so you’re not all tired. Basically, whoever said that doesn’t know what they’re talking about.

Caffeine speeds up your metabolism, so I guess it could help burn fat, but even that’s a stretch.

Caffeine, without going too in depth, places the ‘brakes’ on the central nervous system and when this occurs, stimulation results. The effect is felt because caffeine prevents the breakdown of a molecule responsible for converting one kind of signal or stimulus into another and when it does so this molecule will have a better opportunity to cause its stimulatory effects.

Caffeine can increase the mobilization of fatty acids as a fuel during exercise and that is one of the reasons why it is consumed by many people working towards a particular physique goal. It may increase performance, athletes can typically perform longer and work harder. There are many studies that indicate that caffeine can enhance performance, however, there are also other studies that suggest that caffeine has no such effect, therefore there is an individual variation. 3-5 mg of caffeine per kilogram of bodyweight can provide a performance effect.

As you can see coffee does not have specific muscle building properties, but the effect that caffeine has on an individual’s CNS allows the individual to work a bit harder and for an extended period.

Hopefully this clears your doubt.
:o)

also pretty high in antioxidants

The caffeine improves learning and memory.

It elevates mood. Especially when consumed in the morning by non-morning people.

I think it improves athletic endurance and reduces perceived exertion.

It, um, helps keep you regular.

Thanks a latte for explaining guys.

Get it?

No?

I’ll get my coat…

What about effects of prolonged ingestion of caffeine? Say, a couple of cups a day plus 5-6 cups of green tea? Can it be the reason of eventual “burn-out”?

coffee helps me take a nice dump

I have read that coffee has the most antioxidants of any food product available in America, just something I read somewhere, like to believe it, I drink a lot of coffee.

Me too!

But I wonder why? Anyone got some science behind this fact?

Excuse the lame pun.

I beleive it stimulates smooth muscle i.e. that which lines your gut, therefore promoting evacuation.

I don’t know. I hope not though.

Actually that might be 500 mg of caffeine. . .maybe too much.

For about last three weeks i’ve been tapering caffeine consumption. I only drink a jug of green tea with 3g of leaves in it in the morning. I actually brew the same leaves several times. On the positive - i sleep like a baby. All the problems i had were because of the tea during the day. On the negative - it takes some time to get used to the reduced caffeine consumption. Sometimes i felt very weak, even though i was gradually tapering it off. I substitute my coffee and green tea with peppermint, Roiboose and some other herbal caffeine-free beverages.
