Well, I am sitting here surfing the web and downloading music tonight. I have downloaded everything from Black Sabbath to Harry Nillson from The Go Go’s, our lips our sealed to The Cult, She Sells Sanctuary.
I remembered one of my all time favorites and just got done listening to it. When I find that one woman I can co habitate with (share my life), I hope this song will be fitting for the time when we meet.
Roberta Flack, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face…
So, that made me think we have a lot of the power aggression “what pumps you for the gym” music threads. What kind of mellow music does the T-Nation like to listen to?
I’m sure some of the macho guys might flame me, but I am really curious!
To be honest, I don’t listen to mellow music. If I want to be quiet, mellow or introspective, I sit on my porch with a whiskey and a pipe (yes, a tabacco pipe, not weed) and listen to the wind in the trees.
Damn, I sound like a 235lbs, bald headed, carnivorous hippie.
I don’t really listen to anything “not mellow.” I don’t have music I work out to because I’m so musically-minded that I’d pay more attention to the music than the weight about to fall on my foot.
I’m working on my undergrad degree in music (majoring in film scoring) so this is one topic I can really go on and on about. Some of my favorite composers are (definitely not in any order):
These are some of my favorite film composers (too many to think of, but here are a few):
Hans Zimmer
Tan Dun
Ennio Morricone
Nino Rota
James Horner
Howard Shore
John Debney
John Williams (should be obvious)
As far as more “pop/rock” stuff, I really like:
Bj?rk
Radiohead
Deathcab for Cutie
Coldplay
Denison Marrs
Twothirtyeight
Arkitekt
Joan of Arc
The Postal Service
Telepopmusik
Norah Jones
Mock Orange
The Anniversary
Stereolab
Tom Waits
Not really in any of these categories, but I really like M?rta Sebesty?n and Muszikas. Muszikas is a Hungarian folk group and M?rta Sebesty?n sings with them a lot. Really cool stuff. Tuvan music is awesome, and Tibetan chant is some of the coolest stuff I’ve ever heard. Ok, so any kind of music involving vocal multiphonics (singing more than one note at a time) is awesome in my book. Celtic music is great, and African drumming is pretty intense. Asian music, especially Chinese, is amazing.
For mellow music, I like 70s and 80s RnB like Earth Wind and Fire, Bee Gees, Commodores, James Brown, George Benson, etc. For contemporary mellow music, I like Moby, Alicia Keys, among others. Bob Marley is great mellow stuff too.
As an aside, I generally despise heavy metal, but I love the song you mentioned ‘She Sells Sanctuary’. It’s one of the few metal songs on my I-Pod.
Basically anything in the traditional classical or baroque periods – even stuff from the 19th century, though not as much. Just don’t give me most of the crappy atonal 20th century stuff…
Also, mello jazz – no particular favorite artists, just the mello jazz station on XM.
Wow, some good material. I will have to do some more downloading. I like classical music a lot myself, but I am not very familiar with the composers.
I think this is an opera piece, but in the 80’s movie “The Killing Fields” as the character Sidney Chamberg (sp?) is watching film on Cambodia there is a tragic opera piece playing in the background that I really like. Anybody know what that is?
Deano, I remember the first time I heard “She Sells Sanctuary” Instantly dug it and still do. If you haven’t heard it already “Love Removal Machine” and “Wild Flower” are good songs off of Electric from the Cult.
During that time I liked the “Cure” a lot as well. Remember “Close to you”? I like Moby a lot as well his album “Play” was very soothing music. Another soother is Beck “Sea Change”.
I have really been getting into 70’s R@B lately as well and would like some good suggestion there? I did download some Al Green last night.
And, who can forget the Moody Blues… “Nights in White Satin” and “Tuesday Afternoon” are favorites as well.
Oh, and on film composers, what about Vangelis? I used to have an old Tape, I think the title was “Dreams”. It had
a lot of his 80’s movies music from Blade Runner, Chariots of Fire, Mutiny on the Bounty, another very good soother to listen to.
I listen to alot of “Chill Out” style cd’s. I really like the Ministry of Sound stuff. It is just really smooth and hits many different genres. Other than that it is Sinatra, Harry Connick Jr., Micheal Buble, and I like Sade as well. The Micheal Buble CD got me through my parents visit a few weeks ago, anything that can keep me calm through that has to be good.

No you don’t. You sound like a Bartles & Jaymes advertisement from the 80’s. LOL!

Seriously, though, I enjoy doing that stuff, too.

Yeah, I can imagine Massif like Crocodile Dundee, sitting by the river listening to that drone sound the Aborigines play with that thing they swing in the air.
