Quick question for all of you studying / involved in finance. Have you ever read The Black Swan by Taleb?
If so, I’m wondering what you thought of it.
I’m a computer programmer, hating every minute of it and escaping in October to do some volunteer work then possibly persue a career in diving (either commercial or touristy)
I haven’t read this book yet…but I have heard a good bit about it. As a finance academic, I’ll probably get around to it soon. If you haven’t read it yet, which I’m guessing you have not, I’m fairly certain it’s all about the probability of very unlikely events occurring. There’s another book by Taleb called Chance, or something like that. He basically says that everything in life boils down to probabilities and when you make assertions about various things in life, you can only do so within a certain confidence interval. Pretty interesting if you’re into math, probabilities, or anything else truly important in life. I haven’t read the book, but one of my students has and he really liked it.
It also statistically proves how to determine who you should marry. First, determine how many people you believe you’ll date in your lifetime (ex: 100). Continue dating until you have dated 37% of the total people you will date. Once you pass that threshold, the first person you date who is better than any of the others you have dated is your ‘optimal solution’. So with 100 people, once you bang that 38th chick…if she’s the best you’ve had then sign on the dotted line…
Bango
I have a question and looks like a good place to ask it? Is anybody here involved in aspect of medical sales? It’s something that I’m very interested in. If anybody has any advice or esperience feel free to pass it on. Thanks.

This is what I’m involved in. Used to be a field rep, got promoted to DM, and now my job position is a bit vague…“Co-Regional Manager, Training Assistant and Interpreter” (basically they axed someone and gave me his duties for no additional pay).
If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Uh oh. You didn’t get canned for taking sexy pics at work, did you? ![]()
Nope, canned because there was so little to do that I had the time to take sexy pics at work.
Need an associate? :-)
Yes, actually. But with the hiring freeze my company has going (and the distance of your potential commute), I don’t think it’s a viable option for you. ![]()
I’m a substance abuse counselor at a rehab for 18-25 year-olds with chemical dependency & behavioral health issues.

Play Guitar.
are u in a band??
No. I play classical guitar. I teach, do weddings, private performances, and get paid to study guitar in a graduate (masters) music program.
last recital:

Very nice. I’m a fan of classical guitar and studied it seriously for a while. Tillman Hoppstock and Roland Dyens are my two favorites. I also think Ana Vidovic is the sexiest woman alive. Trying to make a living playing guitar my self but lost all my paid gigs. I’m finishing up a bachelors in guitar performance. Will probably do cruz ship gigs when I graduate.
I’ve wanted to try the cruise ship thing too. Gotta teach, man. It’s easy. Besides parents are impressed when they hear that you have a guitar degree.
But I really dislike little kids, so my choice to pursue graduate studies was mostly so I could do the college teaching thing and not teach little kids. Also being a college prof offers a good venue for performing.
Ana Vidovic, for those wondering:

Hopefully an entrepreneur in the near future.

actually no you dont, I am not a construction contractor.
I am a contractor with freightliner/westernstar,volvo,Mercedes and KW I tell ya the worst trucks in the world to work on are Volvos
I also weld (axle surgeon) and do welding on farm equipment.
I fix tractor trailers and farm equipment for a living,I did it on my own self employed for a while but then started working for a freightliner service point it was nice to work for someone else for a while but they lost funding and the shop closed so I am going back to being a contractor again just dont know when or where, with my skills I can go anyplace in the country and have work.
I am the one that the local dealerships call when there is an emergency road service to do,so I do alot of fixing stuff on the side of the highway, the big 300 pound tires and no start situations.
or they call me to come in and use their shop and my tools to fix something that they can not figure out.
I am the problem solver and go to guy.
right now I am sitting on my ass until I call my contacts up again and get jobs in.
I made a decent living in the past re-popping cat engines.
they pay you 40 hours at a shop rate of 99 dollars an hour but it takes me about 2 days to do it.
day one is tear down and cleaning, spend couple hours blueprinting it and measuring.
day 2 is replace and assemble.
so in a week if I do 2 motors a month for the factory I get 8 grand before taxes and overhead.
about 2 grand after everything is said and done
