I even hate it whan water goes into my nose in a pool…rarely happens but it sucks.[/quote]
If it burns like you got water up your nsoe in a pool, you’re not doing it right.

That’s easy to say for someone whose nasal passages don’t feel like they’re on fire. Saline rinses and environmental changes only do so much good.
For OTC stuff, I find Benadryl to be the most effective, though it takes a while to start working and does make me tired. For me, Claritin does almost nothing.
I’m trying Clarinex and Astelin now (just started yesterday). So far, so good.
I forgot a very important item: Get a good vacuum cleaner.
I recently picked up an excellent one, the Bissell Cleanview II. It was a bargain at ~$80.
In a side-by-side test by Consumer Reports, it cleaned as well as a $500 Dyson. It’s bagless, with a HEPA filter on the exhaust. Makes a LOT of difference.
It depends on what you are allergic too. I removed every square inch of carpeting in my house and put down ceramic tile and the bought a dyson vacuum and most of my allergy problems went away. I guess my big problem is dust mites.
Wash your pillow frequently and the washing your hair and face frequently does help too.
Flonase helps me quite a bit for the seasonal allergies.
I’ve suffered from allergies my whole life (though maybe not as bad as some of the others on this thread) and the best way for me to avoid allergies is to make sure I get plenty of rest. And this means going to bed EARLY . . . which means that I am not the life of a party–unless that party is during the day and even then it is debatable.
When I was little I got shots from an allergist to desensitize myself, but I still get them from time to time.
It’s amazing how allergies can make you feel more smashed and exhausted than the most brutal training session you’ve ever had in your life.
I use Allegra + Flonase. They really help: less sneezing, no wheezing.
I have to agree on the vacuum as well, I got a Eureka Boss 4D, it’s great! It can suck a monkey through 30 feet of garden hose. Plus, it’s got a powered attachment for cleaning stairs/couches/etc. The first time I vacuumed with it, I had to empty the bucket twice per room. Not that I never vacuumed before, just that this one found dust and crud I didn’t even know I had!
After a few weeks on Clarinex, it’s hard to say if it works or not. Pollen counts here went way down about the time I started taking it, and I haven’t noticed much difference since being off it for the last few days. So far Astelin works well and quickly. I’ve needed to use it about six times in the last two weeks, usually for just one nostril. Astelin is an antihistamine spray as opposed to a corticosteroid spray like Flonase.
Ask your doc for a cortisone injection (also called Kennolog sp?) I get one every year in the spring and I’m good to go. Allegra works ok at best for me, plus it still costs me $50 a bottle with my copay. If your current doc won’t give you one, find another doc.
It’s the trees man, they are brutal. They are trying to get us back. It’s a freeking war and we are loosing. Some guy used to poison all the trees the city planted where I live. I used to hate that guy. I was like why are you killing the beauty of our city. Now I know what he was doing.
Afrin…lots and lots of Afrin. Claritin and Flonaise were doing great till this year. My ass is getting kicked. Back on the juice. Thank God for whoever invented Afrin.

I used to get a cortisone shot every year, and that was like heaven. Unfortunately, I can’t find a doctor near here willing to give one anymore.

I was the same. Had a doc that gave me one every year since I was 8. Last year they said the practice changed their policy and would only give the shots under life threatining situations because they are a “steriod”.
I told them to give me the shot or pound sand. Needless to say, getting into a pissing match with the dr didn’t help. Found a new one that gives them out no problems. I hate most Dr’s.
I know one allergy isn’t the other, but I’m allergic to dustmight and it was particularly bad in the winter. I’m on a desensitivity training (no pun intented), and that means I had to get an injection every week for half a year and will continue with injections every other week for another year. And that would take care of it for once and for all. I’ve been feeling the improvement already, but you have to be pretty consistent with it.
Also, I have a nice doctor who gives me a shot (in, shot, out) while charging only the health insurance part of his fee. Isn’t it great to live in a civilised country?
