PBANDY…I was in the Army as well. Also in law enforcement for eight years. You asked for more info on being a fireman. I work 24 hrs on /48 hrs off. With benefit time i work an average of eight days per month. Average salary where i am at is 60-80k per year, great benefits and retirement. More importantly than salary or benefits is the internal satisfaction from helping people. THATS ALL WE DO.

It may be saving life or property but you are only going to help make the situation better. With your military service alot of departments will give you preferance points. It never hurts to take the test. The best decision I ever made.

Thanks for the response. Do you have any recommendations on getting started with applying for the fire department? I’m only 20 right now but will have a B.S. in Kinesiology in two years, but I’d like to see if I can get my EMT-B certification done through my college (if that’s how it works, not quite sure).[/quote]

chrisryan- where is it you are located? are you a paramedic?

PBANDY- i see youre from illinois, where abouts? Im also 20 and am just finishing my EMT-B class. So depending where youre at i could give you some good schools/teachers possibly. And it seems that more and more well basically all of illinois is making it a prereq to be a paramedic just to apply for a job which really really sucks.

PM me if you have any questions. But the EMT-B course is definitely very important and can help you decide between FD or PD. Im gonna be FD all the way lol.

I work for the gov

Getting stoked for football season!

How did you get that job? Sounds exciting, but that’s because I like to fancy myself as a gambler.

It was something I just stumbled into. I moved to Costa Rica a few years ago. My kids invited some classmates over to the pool one weekend and one of their parents is the owner.

It can be exciting at times…I personally am not a gambler…but I am commission only in this job. I make a % of my client’s losses…so it can really get exciting (stressful) when one field goal, touchdown or missed extra point means the difference between me making a few thousand dollars or not. ;p

Well, it sounds like you’re a gambler than, just do not have any choice in the matter and you do not have to front your own money.
