I don’t think it has always been like this has it? I think they are being taught to be vaginas and to flop on every single play. I thought basketball was bad, but these guys just seem like cry babies.

Soccer has always been theatrical, it just takes away from the game when you see all these guys diving and whining.
I still cant figure out what constitutes a red card, yellow card or just a stoppage. Some of the worst contact draws nothing, then some of the exact same stuff draws a yellow, then someone trips and falls and they through someone out of the game. Its almost like the refs reward those that put on the best show. With that said, I can see the penalty kick. I don’t like it but I at least understand it. I don’t understand the Italy red card if you allow the Nigera/Bosnia goal to count without so much as whistle.
… looked to me like he kicked the ground and then just fell.
Are you serious?
My edit didn’t stay. Anyway, I didn’t see how his leg bumped the other guy at first. Still looked like his fault, but whatever…
Obviously there was contact. I don’t think it was enough to knock him over. I think that players are taught to fall once there is contact. There is nothing to lose and the game to win.
However, in this case I agree that CIV got robbed. The Ivory Coast player had his foot planted prior to contact. He was playing the ball and the Greek tried to go through him.
It has been a really odd world cup. England, Spain and Italy all out. There have been some amazingly entertaining games as well as some of the most boring games. The refereeing standard though has been shocking. So many dives and soft penalties, yet when Suarez goes cannibal the ref lets it go!

I can see being surprised by Spain but, Italy and England? Italy failed to pass to the next round last WC as well and England made it due to draws. They then got there asses handed to them by Germany.
I do not know why people mention soft penalties. It has nothing to do with how hard it is. A penalty is not granted due to yellow or red cards but, for fouling in the box.

At best, the no call-foul-yellow-red distinction is a nuanced kind of thing. There is a lot to consider, including the context of the infraction. Whatever the rulebook says, degree of punishment is often not only about the aggressiveness of the mugging. Has this guy done this a few times already, and has he been talked to? What kind of opportunity was developing for the player who was fouled? Did this possibly cost the recipient of the foul a breakaway or a shot on goal?
At worst, it’s just a game of pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey. This has been the case more than a few times over the course of this tournament.
Still, it’s been awesome so far, in my opinion. I always forget how much I fuckin love the World Cup…until it comes on again.

You are telling me this is worthy of a red card ? A fucking RED card ?

England and Italy are much larger footballing nations. Italy underperformed last world cup given they won it in 2006 and they were certainly not expected to lose to Costa Rica. Against Uruguay their negative tactics cost them despite the fact Suarez should have been off, but given the level their players play at, it is a surprise that they are out.
As for England, the team is completely overhauled from last world cup with some exciting young talent. In the Euros they got 7 out of 9 points in the group stage. What cost them is lack of clinical finishing and defensive mistakes. Their overall performance certainly created them enough chances to win it, but teams like Costa Rica have been a surprise package and performed way beyond what anyone expected them too and you can never rule Uruguay out given their firepower up front.
I think you are misinterpreting what people mean by soft penalties. It is not whether the contact is hard or soft, but meaning it is a controversial decision to have adjudged it to be a foul. In most cases the attacking player has just dived under minimal contact which should not have been classed as a foul. The penalty awarded to Brazil against Croatia being a perfect example of a soft penalty that should never have been given.

Basically-
Tackles that aim directly for the ball but unintentionally destroy someone- ok.
Tackles that aim directly for the ball, misses completely, and then the tackler does something that endangers someone else- not ok.
Tackles that don’t really aim for the ball in the first place- Not ok.

That’s kind of what I was leaning towards, I am assuming the middle is supposed to be a yellow, and the bottom a red? Also, sometimes when they blow a play dead for rough play, no card is given and they get to kick from wherever they are at, are those kick’s direct or indirect and how the hell do they decide which is which?

Well, the difference between a red and a yellow and no card at all really depends on the ref.
In general, anything “not ok” is a foul, and a free kick will be rewarded. If the player was overly aggressive/did something intentionally that really could have hurt someone, then probably a yellow card. If they foul repeatedly then probably a yellow card as well. Yellow cards basically mean “Stop doing that”.
Red card, on the other hand, really is just the ref saying “I hold ultimate power and I deem you to be too much of X to be playing, so get out”.

It’s really up to the ref.
Fair to say that refs probably have more power given to them by discretionary rules than almost any other sport? At least it seems that way to me.
