What causes high prolactin and what can you do to lower it?

A pituitary tumor, thyroid problems, certain medications (anti-depressants) and sex can increase prolactin. This is why it’s important to abstain from sex within 24 hours of testing prolactin.

Cabergoline is used to treat high prolactin.

Hypothyroidism, anything that lowers dopamine, some medications (various antipsychotics, SSRIs, opiates), kidney disease. Supplements that can help include Vitamin E, Vitamin B6 (as P-5-P), Mucuna Pruriens (increases dopamine).

In women at least, Estrogen increases Prolactin. Over time I’ve seen my Prolactin go up with a delay when my estrogen would go up.
