I listen to audiobooks and can usually burn a 15 hour book in 2-3 days so I have never had an issue of “Libby repo”. Have you tried audiobooks?
I have noticed that the wait times for popular books are getting longer. It’s no longer weeks, it’s several months. I have had some on the list so long I don’t even remember why I put them on there. I always try to return them as soon as I finish but I think a lot of people just let them time out. I did get my “first skip the line” this week on Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon.
You can always set the fliters to " available now" and find something else not as popular until Wally Lamb comes around. I desperately miss my audible account for new releases.
I just started this today on Kindle. 20 pages in and it’s a really cool plot. I’m amazed at how he’s able to get me interested in random shit like this
Try the Hoopla app. They have more books available and the borrow time is longer. You can only borrow 6 per month and the selection is a bit lower, but I like it better.
I’m like @ChickenLittle and don’t really have that problem. I burn through em’ pretty fast. I do always have 10 on hold (our libraries limit) and I try to make sure they all come up about 2 weeks apart. That has helped me avoid missing things or having them expire, but it does happen sometimes…
I, like @BethB, use Hoopla too. Never a wait list on those!
I have Cloud Library instead of Hoopla. No holds there either. I have nine on hold on Libby right now…lol I hope I have figured out how to tag the books so it will notify me when they get them
I’m too impatient for the book holds so I have multiple book apps to fill in the gaps. Lol. But I’m a bit of a wackado when it comes to reading. I currently have 3 physical books that I am reading and usually burn through 3-4 audiobooks a week. I have a couple of audiobooks that I have basically memorized that I listen to in order to fall asleep. The people talking in my headphones keep the voices in my head quiet. Although to be honest my audiobooks have slowed down lately. Since I’ve been lifting and eating better, my anxiety has reduced exponentially. So I don’t have quite so much need to quiet my brain during the day.
I have a rough time sitting down to read these days. Audiobooks I can blast through anytime. Sleeping books have to be calming. That’s why I go with books I know. If I’m even slightly interested I won’t fall asleep and it completely defeats the purpose.
If somebody wants to learn basics of western philosophy, but feels intimidated by long as and difficult books, I have three easy popular philosophy books which will serve as an excellent introduction. In order:
Julian Baggini: How to Think Like a Philosopher
Ward Farnsworth: The Socratic Method
and maybe Farnsworth’s The Practicing Stoic
I did found these to be very good, even when I was familiar with the concepts.
@SepCalla Have you ever seen the show “Pantheon” or read the short story collection it’s based on “The Hidden Girl and Other Stories” by Ken Liu? I just started the show this weekend and it’s got me hooked. I think it’s an awesome premise
It kinda reminds me of “MOTHERHORSEYES” the reddit thread
