Near Dark by Brad Thor.
We had a lot of Kafkaās work in school. While we read āMetamorphosisā, we only analyzed the cinematic version of āthe trialā. Still mind boggling stuff.
Have you read āthe judge and his hangmanā by Friedrich Dürrenmatt or āthe physicistsā (same author)? Lighter stuff compared to Kafka but sparks a very interesting discussion about moral, nihilism and human motivation.
Iāve read thrillers lately but before that āmanās search for meaningā by Viktor Frankl (highly recommend!), āstaring at the sunā by Irvin D. Yalom and the book series āthe why cafeā by John Strelecky.
I havenāt, but it sounds interesting for sure. Iāll be sure to give it a look.
Right now Iām reading The Age of Surveillance Capitalism by Shoshana Zuboff. I recommend it if you want to feel utterly helpless. Itās still a page-turner though.
I recently finished Schachnovelle by Stefan Zweig. Probably one of the best novellas Iāve read.
Want to revive this thread. So, currently Iām reading The Day Lasts More Than a Hundred Years by Chingiz Aitmatov. Itās awesome. Also, I donāt know why it took me so long to get around to reading it, but last week I finished The Karamazov Brothers.
Goodness gracious you guys are into some heavy readinā.
Just finished reading The Princess Bride for the second time. Possibly one of my favourite books.
Iām re-reading Isaac Asimovās Foundation Series, because theyāre making a TV series based on it.
Which might be dumb on my part because the books are usually so much better, but in this case Iām hoping real life tech inserted into a series written pre-internet might actually deliver.
Iāve been reading a lot about archery in the Hundred Years War. Next up will be āTrial by Battleā by Jonathan Sumption, followed by his other HYW books.
Iām reading The Weed That Strings the Hangmanās Bag by Alan Bradley
That title caught my eye, so I just borrowed the first book in the series.
I also tried out your Pendergast recommendation from a while back. I read the first two, but the 3rd consecutive one located in NYC underground is slowing me downā¦
You need to read some non death everywhere books LOL!
I finished Louie Simmonsā āIron Samuraiā in 3 days. Itās a wild ride, written in Louieās delightfully insane stream of consciousness writing style. If you like Westside Barbell or powerlifting (real powerlifting), itās worth picking up.
Currently re-reading āThus Spake Zarathustraā at a chapter a day. Still one of my favorite books. Giving a similar treatment to āMeditationsā by Marcus Aurelius. I appreciate stoicism, but donāt always agree with it. Also working through Nietzscheās āOn The Advantage and Disadvantage of History for Lifeā, which has been very enjoyable.
Iām nearly finished with āHeroesā Feastā, which is a Dungeons and Dragons themed cookbook, thatās been a fun read. Few of the recipes really excited me, but I imagine itās because Iām approaching it like an athlete rather than a foodie.
I listen to audiobooks and the reader of the Flavia de Luce series is amazing. I think thatās what has kept going on the series.
Do they actually write books like that? Hmmmmā¦I thought Hallmark had made them all into movies by now.
If you want a bit of non fiction, (but still has death everywhere) check out The Devil in the White City. Definitely an interesting read.
Currently reading Hocus Pocus by Vonnegut and The Color of Law by Richard Rothstein.
Recent finishes:
Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport
B Is for Beer by Tom Robbins
Rap Dad by Juan Vidal
We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
Between the World and Me Ta-Nehisi Coates
I like Cal Newportās work a lot. He has a cool blog if you havenāt checked it out yet.
This was my first exposure to his work, and I enjoyed it. So thanks! Iāll check it out.
Currently three books in parallel
The effective Executive by Peter Drucker
Mans search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl
Limitless by Jim Kwik
Just finished āThe Bankerās New Clothesā really well written and a good reminder not to invest in bank stocks ![]()
Almost done with Kolyma Tales- thanks @Bagsy and @kolyma for the amazing recommendation!
Recently finished The Trouble With Being Born by E.M. Cioran, A Short History of Progress by Ronald Wright, and Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy.
Currently reading The Human Condition by Hannah Arendt and Hate Inc.: Why Todayās Media Makes Us Despise One Another by Matt Taibbi.
Welcome, so u like kolyma, iam happy to know that u appreciate this book ![]()
Currently reading American Psycho by Brett Easton Ellis and The Silence by Don Delillo (one of my two favorite modern authors)
Also listening to Dark Data: Why what you donāt know matters by David Hand - All about his statistics can be skewed by missing or unknown data - very interesting book so far.
