I haven’t seen a topic like this on here before so I thought I would share.
I have been shaving with a double edge (DE) safety razor for years. Cheaper and better shave than a cartridge razor. I recently upgraded from a fairly cheap off brand Amazon special safety razor to this Rockwell 6C. So much nicer and multiple blade settings with the various plates.
I also use a badger shave brush and soap instead of aerosol based creams or gels. Soap from Stirling soap company, Proraso, or Colonel Conk (though the new formula sucks).
Anyone else use a DE razor? If so what are some of your favorite blades? I am working through a sample pack to find out what like after using Shark stainless for years and so far these two are winning:
Opening this thread up to other grooming routines for men too. I think this topic is often overlooked by us but as I get older I am trying to take off more than just my muscle and fat stores.
I don’t shave with a DE so if this is off topic, my apologies. I do rock a short beard and a bald head so shaving etc is important to me. For my head I use a Defender Razor w a sensitive blade cartridge. It’s great because I can shave against the grain with it yet no nicks or ingrown hairs.
For my face I have been a member of Harry’s for awhile.
Products, I love Bee Bald shave cream and after balm. It’s cheap and works great.
I use a Merkur razor and used to use Merkur blades. I tried feather blades but didn’t like them. I currently use Personna blades. I bought a box of 100 blades for 10 or 15 dollars. I can’t remember exactly because it was a couple of years ago. That’s how long they’ve lasted. They are pretty good blades, better than I expected for that price.
I use Proraso shave cream, with a brush of course.
I can’t believe how much money men pay for those cartridge blades. What I spent for two plus years, they spend in a couple of weeks.
Not to go off topic but it’s like making coffee at home vs buying it at Starbucks.
Exactly. And the shave is so much better. I hate using a cartridge or disposable razor when I travel. I end up with so much razor burn and a shit ton of ingrown hairs.
My face would get red and blistery. Those moisture strip things they put on the blades make them worse. They start out feeling lubricated but then become dry and rough and the blade is useless. You get one shave out of it while the DE blades give me several. The razor itself seems expensive at first but it’s worth the investment. I’ve had mine for over 15 years.
I use a safety razor, badger brush, lime shaving soap all bought from Vermont Country Store. They only sell the Gillette 7 o clock blades so that’s what I have on hand. This all came from a 1st anniversary gift, only replacing blades and soap a couple times a year so that is what I’ve stuck with. I tried some German made blades once and they didn’t do as well. If the mood strikes me I may try out a new blade brand from the bountiful collection on Amazon.
Been wet shaving using a DE safety razor with Astra blades for about 10 years now
Bought a box of 300 astra blades about 5 years ago and still have about 200 left or so
For a brush I use a 100% silvertip badger brush, forget the brand of soap I use, wife bought me a 4 pack (Viking something or other iirc) for christmas … still have 2 bars left.
And my razor is some small brand I bought off Amazon recently b/c I dropped my last razor behind a cement wall at a camp site that might as well have been a fuckin’ black hole b/c ain’t no one getting anything that falls into that pit …
Only really shave my neck these days - have had a full beard for over 10 years at this point - which is why my blades last as long as they do
obviously cost/shave vs the disposables is lower - I forget how much I save per shave, it’s not like dollars, but cents, but over the years shit adds up … a wise man once said “Many a mickle makes a muckle…” so, there you go
