Westside Makes You Sexy

OMG deads sucked today. Either a form issue (hips too low perhaps) or I’m weak because my diet has been sucking lately. Combo probably. Hams

My son cracks me up. He wanted my wife to go with him to the shed so he could do some coaching.

While I was putting in some insulation I could hear him say “Keep your chest up. Push your knees out. Sit back, back, Back! Up!” He sounded like a mini Dave Tate. But cuter.

haha! Too cool.

Inspired by Matty, out to the shed for some chins and pullups with bands. Wasn’t really counting but about 10 sets in the 5-10 rep range with various bands up to Monster Minis. No idea what the tension is at the top. Great idea. I’m keeping them in.

And how come I don’t look thick like Matty? Oh yeah, he outweighs me by 50lbs. That guy is a big show-off.

LOL NICE! Interesting set up, I usually take the Orange Bands and wrap around a DB heavy enough to stay down. ANNND your doing wide grip chins, Now thats some shit right there. Awesome work broheim.

Im not sure about the tension either, all I know they are tough as hell for me, also with a supinated or narrow grip it seems to hit my bi’s and lower lats more than body weight chins.

Its also, for me a different and somewhat more difficult then weighted chins at the top which I like.

Your arms are looking hella swole yo!

Matty do you hook them around your feet like I’m doing? Feel free to throw a vid in here with your set up. There is probably a vid in your log but there are so many damn pages i’ll never find it, lol.

This is the 1st time I’ve had any kind fun with chins/pullups in a long time. And super easy to set up. Usually I think they are boring as dirt. So thanks for that!

No problem bro, I actually attach the band around my belt and then loop it around a db at the bottom like so…

Oh yeah, I remember that vid. But mostly for the chick in green.
OK, next time it’s belt, DB and orange band. I hope I don’t hurt myself

LOL yeah thats right!

OK, it’s official. I’m going backwards. I am down 12 pounds and that seems to be affecting my numbers…shocker I know.

Bench

  • worked up to 225 x 2. Should have been 4 or 5. Looking back, you could argue it should be 225 x 8 by now.

Reverse band bench
3 x 5

Incline bench
4 sets

EZ bar JM press alternating with EZ bar curls
2 sets of 12-15

So,

  • I need to ramp up my eating so I get back to 200. More shopping at CostCo.
  • Add 2 more sled days per week.
  • Add more training frequency by using the gym next to work. Haven’t been there in over a month.

Now he needs an Inzer shirt.

Just read this by Dave Tate.
I love kids and I respect mental and emotional strength more than physical strength.
I would have left the room too.
Pass me a tissue. I am soft like butter when kids are involved.

"Iâ??ve volunteered in my sonâ??s kindergarten class most of the year, and itâ??s been a great
time. I was there yesterday, walking down the hallway listening to the morning announcements.
I heard something about a fire and donations for the family.

So I go to the classroom and Iâ??m sitting there not even thinking about it. At the beginning
of reading time, the teacher brings up one of the kids in the class. Well, itâ??s the kid who
just lost everything in the fire over the weekend. You could tell the kid wasnâ??t in the highest
of spirits.

The teacherâ??s explaining to the class that the important thing was that nobody was hurt.
Sheâ??s doing exactly what she should do because the kids have questions, you know?
â??Did you lose your clothes?â?? â??Did you lose your toys?â??

He starts talking about how one of his cats ran off because it was scared of the fire, and
his two dogs are now in heaven. And itâ??s just killing this kid to sit up there and talk about it.

All of a sudden these little kids start saying things like, â??You can have some of my clothesâ??
and â??you can have my dogâ?? and â??you can stay at my house.â?? Every single kid in this class
is willing to give this kid their toys. He looks up and says that everythingâ??s fine and he has
everything he needs right in front of him.

I had to get up and fucking walk out of the room.

All these kids know the most important things in life are friends and family. And Iâ??m standing
in the hallway and it just dawns on me. Where did we get so fucked up? Because weâ??re
really starting off okay. It was one of the most inspiring moments Iâ??ve had in my entire life,
seeing the strength and resolve of a five-year-old kid."

My wife was very keen, without any prompting from me, to go with me to the training shed. This pleases me. I think she was inspired by the kids being so comfortable going in with me and doing stuff.
I made a few suggestions and then stayed out of the way. She did goblet squats, hanging knee raises, DB bench, DB row and plate raises. Mostly in a circuit.

I didn’t want to squat while she was there so while I waited I did…
Pushups with 45 plate
4 x 10
HLRs toes to bar
3 x 10

After she finished, then…
Box Squats: Inspired by watching a number (about 20) Westside videos, I did…
w/u sets
225 x 8 x 2 (60%). I’m too slow down and up and had a hard time not flexing my quads first, but it got better in later sets.

Without seeing Westside on paper I really have no idea how to set it up properly. But I’m going to download some stuff and see what’s what.

Good-mornings…I have only ever done these a handful of times. Not sure why. Crappy programming I suppose.
135 x 5
185 x 5
225 x 5,5,5

Band-assisted natural GHRs…getting stronger in these.
3 x 10

I’m pretty excited about using a Westside approach. If any Westsiders have any thoughts or opinions, please feel free to chime in.

Solid work.

A good place to start is the “Basic Training” manual from EFS. It provides some good background info and should be enough to start creating a program.

james

Thanks James.
Actally, I downloaded the “Tour de Force” seminar in writing that went with the videos was watching. We’ll see if I am enlightened or confused.

Some active recovery:

  • sled dragging forward and backward
  • some external rotation work using the sled
  • band good mornings: 2 x 20
  • band pushdowns: 2 x 30

Good lifting as always. Seems like you’re getting the entire family involved, very cool.

I tried to post this yesterday but the 225x5 on the GMs is real solid for not doing’em…I hate them with a passion but HAVE to work em in again

I bought the Adele CD on the weekend and my 9 year old daughter has claimed it as her own. This song she likes so I printed off the lyrics. Hearing her belting out the song while she listens makes my heart want to burst.

I’m hoping to train tonight. Wife is in UK for a few days so scheduling is a challenge.

My wife just got this cd also. my girls (4 and 2) want to hear it nonstop when they are in the car.

That’s cute stuff. Little kids are awesome.
My daughter has the Beiber fever, as she calls it, so I am more than pleased that she is singing along to something else, lol.
