W. Snipes: It Sucks to Be a Celeb

Wesley Snipes was fingered for tax-evasion. He got three years and apparently people in his position usually don’t get jail time, but since he is a celeb the prosecutors argued that the judge should make an example of Snipes. Sucks to be him…

Oh, and that’s bullshit. You can’t make an example of Blade like that. It’s like politicizing the judicial system, or something.

The white man strikes again. First Ronald Isley and now Wesley Snipes. Nobody does that to Passenger 57.

christ, here we go. attack on the poor black man.

It’s not that. If non-celebs don’t go to jail for this in most cases why should he? Are prosecutors going to suddenly start giving everyone jail time? No, so what’s the point of crucifying one man just to make a point? It’s just like congress flaming the baseball guys to death. It’s a dog and pony show and now my man BLADE has to take it in the ass? Fuck that!

I understand that some people have to scrape to pay their taxes, but why in the fuck is Blade not paying his? Shouldn’t he have a legal team, or an accountant, or even a fucking personal assistant that keeps track of this shit?

This pisses me off just like the pro ballplayer driving his Jag without tags, WTF are you thinking, hire someone to do the shit that you don’t want to think about.

He’s actually part of a group that protests paying taxes because they believe that the government has no right to tax them or something. He intentionally withheld payment.

Oh, thanks for the clarification.

Wow, I don’t know what to say about it now. I kinda think he is a dumbass for not paying, but then again I kinda respect him for saying “fuck it.”

Is the jail time a done deal or will it go back to court for some type of retrial?

I think he’ll have to actually sit in jail for one year and be court supervised for the rest of the time.

He had a couple of accountants. They were convicted of tax fraud and conspiracy.

Snipes’ excuse for not paying taxes, "I am an idealistic, naive, passionate, truth-seeking, spiritually motivated artist, unschooled in the science of law and finance’’

He said his wealth and celebrity attracted ‘‘wolves and jackals like flies are attracted to meat.’’ He called himself ‘‘well-intentioned, but miseducated.’’

Indeed, being a multi-millionaire will indeed attract some extra attention, especially from this little organization called the IRS.

I wish it didn’t happen to him, because I like him as an actor, but I must say, it’s moderately refreshing to see a celebrity get treated MORE harshly by the judicial system than a ‘nobody’.

He should write a book while in jail and then go into politics. Good, proven formula.

Non-celebs aren’t prosecuted. Celebs are prosecuted for the deterent effect. By the way, prosecutors don’t give jail time. Judges do. The amount of jail time is dictated by federal sentencing guidelines. The judge has limited discretion. The higher the tax owed, the less discretion.

Snipes allegedly owed $2.7 million in back taxes for the 3 years at issue. Offense level 24.

§2T4.1. Tax Table
Tax Loss - Offense Level

(A)$2,000 or less - 6
(B)More than $2,000 - 8
(C)More than $5,000 - 10
(D)More than $12,500 - 12
(E)More than $30,000 - 14
(F)More than $80,000 - 16
(G)More than $200,000 - 18
(H)More than $400,000 - 20
(I)More than $1,000,000 - 22
(J)More than $2,500,000 - 24
(K)More than $7,000,000 - 26
(L)More than $20,000,000 - 28
(M)More than $50,000,000 - 30
(N)More than $100,000,000 - 32
(O)More than $200,000,000 - 34
(P)More than $400,000,000 - 36.

well that right there merits a “FUCK YOU YOU’RE GOING IN” response from the Government.

It’s true. Ask any competent CPA and they will tell you that taxes are entirely voluntary. There is NO law that says you must pay taxes. Its just that when you don’t, the government pretends there is. So, I guess you can say its mandatory that you voluntarily pay Federal Income Tax.

The whole Tax system is fucked up anyway, just like the Electoral College.

I hate to hear this, especially since he offered $5 million as a gesture of good faith and they STILL threw him in jail for 3 years. That seems a little off.

Does anyone know the chances of an appeal making a difference here?

I can think of many areas where that would do more good than trying to scare the general public into paying taxes by making an example of him.

I see more harm done socially by Lindsey Lohan than right here.

The “FairTax” is the idea of a flat tax, which is fine and great and dandy. What you’re talking about, that taxes are “voluntary,” is a bunch of bullshit that’s popular with some people who have failed miserably in attempts to “outwit” the IRS. The FAQ I linked to should explain any issues you find confusing. I believe you will find it an edifying experience, and if you were willing to read a book on the subject I’d imagine a web-based text file wouldn’t be much of a challenge for you.
