Vitamin D

Yeah mine is D-3. I agree about too much is “possible” but about half an hour during the summer outside with just shorts on produces 20,000 ius.

So I find it hard to believe anyone is going to “overdo” vitamin d, while I agree that it is possible.

I try to get out in the sun during the summer and don’t take extra supplementation then, but any days I don’t and most of fall winter and spring I take it.

Just a quick note fellas.

All of the information online, as well as the experts, suggest that Vitamin D-3 specifically is the one you want.

So Make sure thats the one you get

I use 4000IU a day, lef.org brand

I take a multi, but didn’t realize that it was only 10% of what I should be getting. I read the Bowden article too…just didn’t think to check how much I was getting. Thanks for the wake-up call.

Most Multis don’t contain anywhere near, check your labels. Superfood is great but I doubt it has much vit D at all if any, (PLEASE correct me if I’m wrong).

I would go with 2000 IU - 4000 IU.

They won’t tell us how much is in Superfood. =P Judging by similar products, you’re totally right.

Yeah vitamin D is fat-soluble and rarely found from food sources… I doubt there is much D2 in Biotest Superfood considering what it’s made of. Of course, it probably has thousands of other beneficial water-soluble vitamins and phytochemicals we have yet to discover. Wish I could afford a couple tubs right now lol… Probably just as beneficial as getting your A’s, B’s, C’s, and D’s.

(edit: I think I made it sound as if plants don’t have fat-soluble chemicals, sorry… you know what I mean)

I was literally just thinking about this. I’m fairly certain I get seasonal depression disorder, and being that I’m in NY in fucking December, I’ve found myself quite irratable, annoyed, and just down in general.

I’m going to start supplementing with vitamin D, now. lol

Thanks for the thread, by the way, I didnt know of the other benefits.

I’ve started using only vit.D-enriched milk, but I’m also looking to find a supplement.

Looking forward to getting to warmer climates; my white norse skin will be turned into a heck of a vitamin D-producer. Just gotta continue eating my eggs so there is enough cholesterol to synthesize vit.D…

another thing: there are 2 kinds of vit. D: D2 and D3. D2 is usually what is found in vitamins, but it isn’t the kind we need; D3 is. so i wouldn’t count on regular multi-vitamins for the D. i’d go for sun if you can, and cod liver oil otherwise.

D2 comes from plants sources D3 is from animal sources and is type our skin produces from the sun.

I don’t think it matters which one you take. Where did you get this information?
The ones I’ve listed are D3 by the way.
i correct myself, it’s less potent.

don’t worry, the skin won’t produce more than it needs, so you can’t overdose from sun exposure, but you can from supplementation.

It turns out my multi has 1,000 IU. And I take 2 a day…because I’m not a 160 lb male on a 2,000 calorie diet. But I’m gonna look into the D3.

i wouldn’t worry about overdose unless you’re getting like 40000 UI/day.

Oh I know, I was just surprised to see that I was getting more than I thought. And I plan on taking more…I’m not really spending much time outside this time of year.

There was a great article written about this

check it out, it is good.

Thanks OP for putting this all together for us.

I started taking 4000IU of D3 (gel caps)2 years ago. I get my level checked twice a year, it’s always in the low 60s- the range my lab uses is 32-100. If I could use only one supp Vit D would be it. Since starting Vit D I almost never get sick. Do a search on anitmicrobial peptides + vit D. D is proving itself to be a natural antibiotic.

Humans evolved running around half naked in the full sun. Now men are scared of getting cancer if they don’t wear brimmed hats and slather on SPF 83,000. I also do brief tanning sessions to help keep my D level up.

Working in the medical field I can tell you that most MDs know less than squat about vit D, so you’ll have to request the blood test if you want it.

Are the softgels really that much better than capsules? If so, the Carlson bottle is the one I was looking at picking up.
According to Dr.William Davis, tablets through test showed no blood absorption, and only gel caps should be used ( What is Heart Disease? And Other Heart Disease Questions ).

I’m switching to gel caps.

Carlson’s 360 softgels 2000 IU $12.60

I didn’t read the whole thread so apologies if this was mentioned already, but Now Foods just came out with a 5,000 IU softgel, and it was not expensive at all. Much more convenient than taking 3-5 2,000 IU pills.

Interestingly enough, a doctor I know takes a 100,000 IU pill 1x/month; he says that since it is fat-soluble you won’t excrete the excess. Rather it is stored and can be utilized as needed. Don’t know if there is any credence to that or not, but it seams feasible at the very least.

People need to stop using sunscreen and spend a MINIMUM of a couple of hours in the sun everyday.

Is that so hard?
