Ive made a similar argument for years that people are labelling themselves VEGetarians or VEGans when barely a VEGtable has seen the inside of their virtue signalling mouths. The VEG in VEGetarian seems to have lost its meaning.

I like eating animals but i love vegetables and I eat far more plants than a lot of these “vegetarians” because of health and stuff.

My GFs vegetarian sisters diet is pretty much processed junk, huge cream and sugar laden costa coffee concotion each day, cakes, and pasta with jarred pesto and cheese.

I had to point out as she didnt bother to do any research (with only a teenzy weenzy hint of smug on my mug) the cheese she regularly consumes and the cheese in the pesto both contain rennet. You cheated. Crestfallen. Face looked.like she’d been caught red handed eating her pet dog after a hard day bludgeoning baby seals wearing her favourite mink coat.

Are there jarred vegetarian cheeses? I didn’t know that. And, I maybe wrong here, but I’m under the impression that few cheeses use animal rennet anymore. Instead, they use chymosin, derived from bacteria. However, jarred cheeses may be different. Let me know if I’m wrong.

How about quorn then? A funghi with a “complete amino acid profile” (or so they say, I mean sale). Grown in large tanks. I happen to like it - in fact, I had it for lunch today. Do need some spices as it’s nearly tasteless. A bodybuilders dream? Though a processed product nevertheless.

I haven’t gotten to try it yet. And the fact that it’s mildly processed isn’t a big deal. Some of our best foods are mildly processed (protein powders!).

It was the parmesan in the jarred pesto. As i understand parmesan still uses rennet but as you say maybe thats changed. Food labelling in the UK doesnt have to specify whats in your cheese, although if vegetarian it would likely tell you but theres still small producers around using rennet. There was a particular local artisan variety she kept eating that was made with rennet but cant remeber what it was.

Right, I think the artisanal guys still go old school.

Greed is driving big corporations, so I am convinced that they will not even try to make the carbon footprint smaller. This would mean less money and this is not acceptable. Even if this means devastated earth in 50 years and wars for resources.

As with most things these days, its no longer about fueling your body to accomplish the day’s tasks (like so many things, e.g., a car no longer just takes you from A to B, but is a status symbol and so much more). It’s politics, climate change, laziness, insta-gratification needs, etc. A clusterfu… and FUBAR rolled into a shitshow. Need more small farms, more small businesses, more self-reliance, more accountability, etc. But I won’t be holding my breath. Great article.

The best thing is no to buy and eat industrally processed food.
It’s healthier and much cheaper to get fresh things and taste better :slight_smile:

No milk no Cheese.
The Industry only calls it cheese to sell it.
It is like Milk from rice. No that’s ricewater but that sound strange and nobody will buy ricewater
or sojywater so they call it milk

I’ve eaten a plant based diet for a long time now–primarily due to disdain for factory farming. However, when I eat the Franken-meat, I completely view it as “junk food” and consider it a splurge. Therefore, I try to minimize my consumption and eat it as infrequently as possible. I think it’s worse for you than a “regular” burger and this article makes that abundantly clear.
