Vegas Shooter Kills 50+

I don’t think there are any solutions to this. Not complete solutions. We’d need some seriously draconian measures to get the guns out of circulation, and even then millions of guns would never get rounded up. Involuntarily committing people to mental facilities would surely put a dent in the mass shootings, but at what cost? I carry concealed, but let’s not delude ourselves into thinking that you’re taking out a gunman on the 32nd floor with a 9mm fired out of a 3.1" barrel.

I don’t have a panacea, but we don’t need to wait on government to do something about it. I believe people can always do more to show and share love to everyone else around them. That is something I think we can all improve on. Being a decent and considerate person doesn’t have to cost anything. The more people we have who are wrapped up in acts of love and kindness will be fewer people who feel alone, abandoned and without hope.

Like it or not, we are all connected by the way we interact with each other on a daily basis. And since this is T-Nation, I’ll say that the best thing for me about becoming a stronger person has been that it strengthens my abilities to give, protect and share. Maybe an act of kindness is what plants the idea in the next wacko’s head that he shouldn’t follow through with that massacre after all.

It is a long shot, I know, but I’d place a bet on love and kindness long before I’d put my money on a solution coming from Congress.

There’s examples all over this forum that suggest comments by Antifa (or the woman fired at CBS, or some other anarchist) speaks for those on the left. They don’t.

You accused ED of rushing to their defense at every turn. Perhaps it’s because there’s a lot of broad-brush painting going on.

Then put down the one you are holding, because that last stroke was about as far off the mark as one could be.

If anything, I’m very respectful of ED, as he is to me, and I would never accuse him of being party to a hate group like antifa.

I know…i was saying…what do you mean they will try and make vegas less free or not fun.
Ie what will they take away? I dont see them taking away gambling booze or outside events

Tyler23, I forgot to mention your name earlier when I said ED has fortitude to keep wading into these shit shows.

Got a question for y’all.

Does this change anything in how you view your plans for self-defense?

Most every plans I hear/read seems to assume that the attacker is at least on the same level as you are when they fire upon/attack you, and that it is possible to view them in some form or fashion and find some way to avoid the attacker’s sight if they are shooting at you.

Seems very reminiscent of the guy who shot people from the tower at Uni of Texas.

I honestly don’t know how arming yourself would be helpful here. Do you believe yourself trained enough to know how to determine where the shooter is and shoot back while being reasonably certain you won’t hit bystanders?

All i need is my 18" Gunz for my self Defense

It wouldn’t. Not many people are trained to that level, and virtually nobody is equipped to return fire. Even growing up in deer hunting central, I can tell where a shot is coming from, which direction, and whether its a riffle, shot gun or pistol, but thats out in the woods. In an environment with buildings there is too much noisy reflective surface and it gets confusing.

There was a kid I worked with that is like super pro gun, always carrying, etc. So I asked him- “If there was an active shooter where we get lunch (huge grocery store with a giant section of hot carry out, usually at least thousand people a day through for lunch) do you think you could actually take down the shooter without killing anybody else?”.

Thats when he admitted that he really isn’t that good with a pistol. He was nationally ranked in competition with a rifle, but poop with a pistol.

Then I asked him “Even if you did manage to get a couple of shots off and not kill anybody- What are you going to do when the cops show up to an active shooter call and you’re standing there with a gun?”.

Him- “I’ve never even thought about that.”.

Me “You should!”.

Not really. There’s no real way to defend against an elevated attacker with the element of surprise like this. I mean, I’m not carrying my AR-15 to a concert because I might need to reach out and touch someone 300yds away.

The best thing here is situational awareness. How many exits are there, where are they, can I get to them easily or is the way blocked, is there a place to take cover, etc…

I just want to highlight this as one of the reasons nothing ever changes. I am assuming you’re implying ED and Tyler have fortitude because those of us that agree with the 2A are essentially gun tooting nutjobs.

Solid way to get a real conversation going alienating the other half of the discussion. It’s no wonder people are so entrenched in their ideology.

idaho has written some great stuff to that effect regarding basic preparedness attending any large event. The best defense in that situation is merely knowing your surroundings and how you would “escape” if something broke out.

This comes back to an earlier discussion between Nick and pat re: “well, off duty cops should be able to just pull out their weapon and stop the guy.” I’d call on any of our military/LEO friends to speak up about this, but my impression is that when the first responders get to the scene, they’re not going to be able to discern the “good guy with a gun” from the “bad guy with a gun” very easily, and that you’re really sticking your neck out there if you, concealed-carry Charlie, decide you’ll get out the ol’ six-shooter and try to take down the bad guys.

This deserves emphasis.

This also deserves emphasis.

A word about taking Internet Post as “Gospel” (like the Antifa one posted):

I don’t know their Goals, current strength OR influence (and I wonder if many of you do).

But I DO know this: (and even FOX agrees):

One of the known Goals of the Russians; besides influencing our elections; is to sew the seeds of anger, discord and division withing our society. This is not “speculation”…but has been proven by our intelligence agencies beyond a doubt. And they are actively still at it, folks.

While some inflammatory post from Social Media may be true about “the other side”…I have begun to view them all with a High Level of skepticism.

Absolutely, @idaho is a great resource on the forum.

Smashing Windows, starting fires. All because a gay immigrant conservative was invited to speak. The “Antifa you know” is a fairytale. They are violent and odious. Full stop.

@tyler23 if i thought you guys were violent bat-carrying mask-wearing thugs I wouldn’t be debating you.

While gun-toting nutjobs certainly exist, I have not suggested that anyone here fits that bill.

Surely the irony of this statement is not lost on you.

Confronting violent white supremacists/Nazis in the street. Violent, yes. Odious?

I was talking to Nards…

It is?

That is the most profoundly American thing I have ever seen. Didn’t even drop his beer.
