The reason for a possible “first strike” becomes clear when one realizes the implications of Saddam’s possible usage of nuclear or biochemical weapons. During World War II this was not a problem. Secondly we are not planning to use such weapons against Iraq and do not want to resort to such a measure were Saddam to utilize this technology. Incidently, Saddam Hussein is extemely anti-semetic, anti-America, and willing to use extreme means to achieve his goals. History has shown that dictators of his caliber are very unstable; evil and selfish enough commit the most hideous acts of murder-mass destruction possible. Additionally, like Hitler, Saddam has a political, and relegious (very important) agenda in the goals he’s persuing.
Regarding Islam I’ve seen many Palastinian supporters over here cheer after 9/11 (I find it inconcievable people are “tired of hearing about 9/11”. I’m pretty sure citizens in 1941 did not feel the same way about Pearl Harbor) and of course oversees as well. This is a little larger than simply “a few extremists”. What’s worse is that many of the Islamic governments support this kind of cowardice as this is where terrorism the financial aid is recieved. Not to mention that Palastinian children are being brainwashed in school to become “fanatics”. Nevertheless I recognize not all muslims support this either; this is plainly obvious and should always be kept in mind.
Frankly I believe we should have removed Saddam from power during the Persian Gulf War but politics frequently interfere with a sensible agenda. Lastly, I hope whatever decision is made is the correct one. I would, myself, prefer peace t owar but in my opinion I think it a necessary one for the existing situation.
