If you market a movie as woke, chances are it’s going to flop nowadays unless it’s really geared towards a female audience like Little Women. And when a movie is marketed as woke, it’s very likely the movie sucks because they made it too woke so it’s kind of a Hail Mary attempt to try to get as much of the woke crowd in as possible to at least break even.
The only movie like this in the last 2 years that I can think of that didn’t flop was Captain Marvel. And that’s only because it was promised as a bridge between Infinity War and the upcoming Endgame. They lied.
For a single movie, sure. But you can look at general trends and try to analyse why some things tend to fail. I’m obviously not an expert and don’t have the time to do some complex analysis, but from the top of my head I can think of 3 woke remakes in recent years that were all heavily marketed: the all female Ghostbusters, all female Ocean’s 8 and the new Charlie’s Angels. I think of these, Ocean’s 8 is the only one that made a profit and all 3 have poor to mediocre reviews (2.8, 5.3, 3.1 respectively from Metacritic user reviews - critics obviously vary). Now that may indicate a trend or it may not. I’m sure some blogger somewhere has put together the numbers on this much more comprehensively than I have. The studios certainly would have.
Ocean’s 8 was also part of a successful franchise that wasn’t 3 decades old and the movie wasn’t even marketed as woke and starred bankable stars like Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchette along with Rhihana.
The same cannot be said about Terminator Dark Fate, which was marketed as woke due to a terrible miscalculation since the first 2 Terminator movies always had a feminist slant until they realized they really should have put Arnold a lot more in the trailer and posters but it was too late since the main demographic for the Terminator movies was MALE lol. The movie was woke and pretty lame but I’ll give it credit for at least not sucking.
Charlie’s Angels was one of those woke movies they tried to virtue signal and guilt trip people into watching but, alas, it flopped. Same with Birds of Prey. The producers probably knew they had potential flops so they decided to resort to the aforementioned tactics. The movies were excessively woke and sucked balls.
The Ghostbusters remake was just SAD. It failed spectacularly in every single way imaginable even on the marketing end with a 150 million dollar budget.
And don’t get me started on A Wrinkle in Time. Oh God I’d rather watch the Ghostbusters remake 10 times than watch that again once. And that was a 120 million dollar flop.
At least Charlie’s Angels and Birds of Prey had the common sense to keep their budgets relatively low. The former couldn’t even turn a profit on a 45 million dollar budget.
And seriously, can ANYONE name me a GOOD filmmaker or writer in Hollywood who is NOT a progressive other than Mel Gibson, Clint Eastwood and John Milius?
Anyone?
Just name me 1. That’s all I’m asking for.
Don’t give me dead people like Mario Puzo.
Just one.
And, no, Michael Bay doesn’t count although I loved the Transformer movies.
I couldn’t agree more! When those left-leaning militia plotted to kidnap, “try,” and kill Michigan’s governor…I nearly cleared my facebook page of liberal friends. No one needs that kind of crazy in their lives, chanting randomly “lock 'er up,” “fire Fauci,” and “eight more years!”
Personally, I much prefer the cool calm Trump radiates.
Orrrrr, the far right is still not sure the election is truly lost, so is still “standing back and standing by.”
Not yet, it could still happen. But that comment was relating to the tweet below it saying that Republicans who don’t accept the election results should lose their jobs and not be accepted into society, many Democrats didn’t accept the results of the last election either.
It does seem like similar tactics but a softer version, no?
Haha I’m thinking in terms of numbers, actually. Perhaps I should have said the left is more likely to voice their displeasure through mass demonstrations? I’m guessing it’s because lots of them are younger and these are the ones doing so. I lean a little to the left myself.
Thought that would be the only logical explanation.
Not entirely true. Media have not usually waited until all votes are cast to announce a state. This has been normal for over 30 years.
And the recounting state was not the one that clinched it for Biden - that was PA, which is not in mandatory recount territory. Biden gets PA, he does not need GA. At all. So it would not matter whether GA recounted or not.
Exactly. That’s simply not realistic right now.
No, it doesn’t. People already explained this to you, but in those states - and particularly PA - the officials were NOT ALLOWED to START counting absentee ballots until election day. This was ALWAYS going to lead to a delay and as absent ballots are strongly Dem, it was likely going to shift the vote towards the blue team.
Yeah they learned their lesson absolutely. That was a real nightmare. One hopes that other states take the clue as well.
I freaking love that movie. It was fantastic in almost every way an action movie could be.
Still awful. And the book is actually much better (no surprise there). The book is actually really good.
This was a complete and utter abomination. That is all that can be said. The Wrinkle in Time book was at least good and a kids book. The movie…FML.
I’ve actually thought quite a lot about this and I think people will probably accept it IF they watch the movie. What I mean is that there’s going to be lots of controversy prior to it’s release since the fucked up media is going to go with sensationalist headlines and the SJW loons will be going crazy on social media. This will probably work in the movie’s favor and anyone who actually watches it will understand the context and defend it so I doubt it will be cancelled.
HOWEVER, the question is will any studio take the RISK of producing something like this? I’d say probably not. So I guess it wouldn’t be made today unless someone like Tarantino does it.
Like saying Downey is in black face when he was not. He played a character who was portraying a character who was black. That does not meet the definition of blackface. And even if the character were in blackface, it was still Downey portraying a character who was in blackface and not Downey himself acting in blackface. But the media and the SJWs don’t understand these subtleties.
It was a fucking masterclass in visual storytelling. George Miller is like in his 70s ffs. It was one of those high risk big budget movies like Gangs of New York that I couldn’t believe I was watching in the cinema today with all the other safe, generic crap being produced.
One mega budget China movie by a great Hong Kong action director Dante Lam called Operation Red Sea(it’s amazing) even paid tribute to the sandstorm scene, but with a high speed tank chase lol.
Didn’t read the book nor watch the movie. I only followed it’s marketing campaign.
I don’t understand how the movie even got made. I’d get it if it was a low budget indie movie but this was a 120 million USD production. Any sane producer watching 10 min of footage during the filming process should have halted production and fired the film crew. There’s simply no way to describe how bad it was. One has to see it for himself to understand.
