Urgent Canadian Question - DWI?

Alright lads, me and a group of buddies were planning on going to Montreal for New Years’. The only problem is that I hear your country has a massive problem with DWI’s and those that have them on their record.

Are they going to turn me back at the border because of this? Or will they let me in without a problem as long as I don’t get in trouble?

Any help or answers are appreciated.

Try posting your question here or one of the other major Canadian cities if you don’t get any answers here.

Certainly in the past, anyone with a criminal record needed approval to get across the border.

I don’t know the details, such as what type of conviction, or whatever, but it sucks getting turned back at the border. I don’t have any information on how strict they are though.

My knowledge dates back quite a while and things could have changed. You could call the border people and get their policy (or maybe find it on their web site).

My cousin is dating an American girl right now who was charged with a DWI. It happened 4 years ago, and she is not allowed into Canada. I think she’ll be allowed in after 5 years. Not completely sure, but I think it’s five years after the offence.

Best Idea ever! Go to Montreal!! Get a hotel on St Cathrines st. Pref the Days Inn. Good price and right where you need to be. Leave your car there and take a cab. Trust me, everthing is right there on the strip. No need to be driving around.

Good idea is to bring booze, or get it at the duty free, we have a tough time finding package stores there. But beer is sold in all little shops. If you have any questions, PM me. I love Montreal!! Best place ever!

In Canada we don’t differentiate between misdemeanors and felonies. Immigration law states that if you have been convicted of an offence…then you are inadmissible.

Question: how long ago did it happen? Over five years ago? If so, you could apply for something called rehabilitation. If the DUI is your only offence, safe bet that you will get, all other things being equal.

Reality: if you are driving across with a bunch of guys for a party, who knows, you may not even get asked if you have a criminal record. On the other hand, depending on what you guys look like, you may have to go in. BE HONEST when questioned.

Worse case scenario: you get sent in, they tell you that you can’t come in and you ask if they would considered a Temporary Resident Permit. It costs $200 CAD.

Good Luck

Anyone from New Jersey is turned back on principle.

We couldn’t call it “La belle province” if it had random bits of New Jersey walking around, now could we?

And how many Jersey soldiers have died in wars protecting the continent while you guys hide behind our skirts?

Enough, I bet.

Now, if the U.S. will just do something to protect it’s borders. I don’t blame you for letting drunks in either.

None.

In the only war where the continent was attacked, we were fighting long before you guys decided to get involved.

In New Jersey, even the history books suck.

Sure enough, Canadians can’t fight for shit. Or at least they go down real easy.

Can’t say I’m surprised.

By the way, i yelled, “Luftwaffe” at the border and pointed towards the sky at the border and all the guards ran away.

Must be in your blood or something.

Please see The First World War. 1917-1918, American involvement. 1914-1918, Canadian involvement. Vimy Ridge, look that up. One of the few decisive victories won in the entire war on either side. Who did it ? Canadians, without French, British or American assistence. Also, see Ypres where the Germans first used mustard gas in large amounts. The French ran. The Canadians held the line.

See the War of 1812 where Canada wiped the floor with the American army. Our American friends’ greatest victory came AFTER the war was officially declared over at The Battle of New Orleans. We litteraly burned the White House down which is coincidentally why it was white-washed. World War 2…American involvement was two years less than that of Canada.

Right now, the Americans and pretty much everyone else high-tailed it out of Afganistan where even the massive Soviet Red Army was owned. Who is holding it down with no signs of leaving ? Canada. Where as you Americans by and large want to run with your tail between your legs out of Iraq just like you’re doing in Afganistan.

Suck it, Jersey boy. :P.

You opened your mouth to expel fetid breath AND exposed an armpit to open air at the same time?

There’s a reason they ran: it’s called The Jersey Stench.
