All solid advice. I’d add/expand with the following:

Predators don’t tend to fight other predators unless they are forced. The key mindset to have at all times is to conduct yourself as a potential predator, without being overtly a potential threat. We’re talking simple things here - walk tall and alert, no valuables on display obviously, no taking phonecalls when you’re walking through the neighbourhood etc. If you can avoid treading on any toes by straying into no go areas for gangs, and can give off the vibe that you’re not looking for trouble but you’re damn sure prepared to deal it out by the spadeful if it finds you, you shouldn’t have too much trouble.

Surely, you can make a living in this country without being able to do geometry proofs and algebra. I’m not here to comment on whether all kids should go to college vs. get technical or trade educations. But, because I grew up with parents that did emphasize education, I just struggled to figure out how, if at all, one could reach a kid that comes to school and just shuffles their way from class to class without giving ANY effort, knowing that kid is going home to a place where no one cares what happened to him at school that day. I completely agree with you. I’m not saying that kids should get a college education vs. going to trade school, getting and apprenticeship, etc… but I think we can all agree that they should do at least one of those things so they can raise a family in a somewhat comfortable environment. That brings us to an entirely different topic though which is raising a family instead of knocking up 4 different women and peacing out on all of them leaving numerous children with no father…

Sorry OP[/quote]

No worries bro. I’ve already got my answers. I grew up super poor and didn’t qualify for fafsa because we owned land. I got bent over and f*cked on that deal. I’ve got BS and an MS. If people want a middle class lifestyle all they have to do is work hard for it.

I got screwed on FAFSA too because my biological father is really wealthy. He wasn’t around to help me out though so I had to find another way. It’s funny how the system works. The people who would utilize help appropriately don’t always get it but people who would squander it seem to get it effortlessly.

I had no clue- Loft was from Queens- good to hear your input.
BTW which HS did you go to?

I grew up in Brooklyn in the shitbox area in the shitbox 70’
and I travel allot for work -which happens in stadiums and arenas, none of which are in a good neighborhood.

From LA to Detroit, Philly, Maryland, Pittsburgh, even St,Louis all the stadiums ( an or arenas) are in shit ass urban neighborhoods
and to be honest - I am working fucked up hours to begin with -its not always that safe

First I would echo the advice to secure your home, alarms better locks guns a small safe etc.
any way you needed.
Id advocate the dogs, and yes the carry permit.

On people-
I had a hard time in the south- and even some of the ‘nice’ midwest.
New Yorkers are not big on Eye contact and or greeting people Its unnatural for us.
but I thought it might be rude - to not respond to people while traveling.
and its different in the south, it kind of threw me off my game so to speak and I found a lot of grimey ass people
hiding in plain site trying to come off on me- in ways I hadn’t thought of.
Im talking about waiters , taxi people , barbers - just everyday people

all that is shit I would not think of twice in at home- because while still vigilant -
I know my ‘turf’ so to speak and I fit in allot better.

I also wasn’t ready for these same people observational powers…
that I had a bag or back pack - not something locals walk around with
that I had an accent
that I might have nicer jacket , clothes etc.
Im also not a big guy- at 5’6" or 5’5"
things like grooming- your hair clothes style sneakers, mannerisms etc
or that I went to the ‘nice’ coffee place
that I might have tipped what is normal to me- usually 20 %

or when I sat down for a meal - ‘was I enjoying my stay at the hotel across the way ’
‘how are you finding our good city’
‘where are you staying’
’ are you here for the game concert etc’
‘let me know if you ever need anything in our town’
and many of these seemingly nice people
had motives- or wanted cash or assumed I would have cash etc.

sorry for the long post- but this was more about observations I had while traveling
or being in a new place

I try to read up on surveillance and counter surveillance for this very reason
its easy when traveling to stick out.
I see all my co-workers leave the hotel - starbucks in one hand - phone in the other
wearing a Laminate ID with the event name on it etc- all concentrating on getting to work
its easy to fall into this pattern just be aware situationally

I am not from Queens New York, although I did spend a lot of time there and in Jackson heights for a job I had. I am from a neighborhood in Jackson MS known as the Queens because the street names are “Queen Eleanor” “Queen Elizabeth” etc… It is basically just the slums of Jackson which, incidentally, is also the poorest major city in the country (I think Detroit may have that title now though).

There are people there who burn coal for heat and get their water out of a well at the end of the street. It’s like stepping back in time on some of those roads. It is the inner city but there are chickens and goats and pigs in people’s yards and dig fights in the alley ways. People grow weed in buckets on the roof of the project housing and you hear gun shots every day at least once. It is a very strange and depressing place.

Wow everybody is honking on Detroit. Detroit is not that bad it just has a image problem, and some seriously messed up politics. But the people are solid. I feel pretty comfortable anywhere except the Cass in Detroit at anytime. I can’t say the same for the south side of San Antonio or parts of East LA, where its a war zone after dark. Brotard good points about the simple innocuous questions, they are not coincidental. Thanks good advice from a seasoned traveler.
