Just wondering what the Union members here think about the outcome, and what you hope gets accomplished in the upcoming Presidency?

I am an elected union official in my local, and I am wholeheartedly upset with the election of BHO. It is my hope that BHO and his cronies in the congress will not be able to pass the Employee “Free Choice” Act. Good grief, what an un American idea.
What craft/union are you in? Here on our chunk of the railroad, we are hoping that this group will be very rail friendly and give us a great national contract, we were able to get 17% out of the Bush admin. Hopefully we can get about 25% or so, which would be a huge raise, but with these bullshit rail laws that congress passed after Chatsworth we will need it.
As far as the employee free choice act, I have no idea about the ins and outs of it, but I have read that as a union we are backing it, I will definately check out what its all about though.

I’m a Firefighter/EMT, and was elected to Secretary/Treasurer early this year. As far as the Employee Free Choice Act, I’m not sure if the IAFF is going to back it or not, wait and see I guess. Basically it does away with secret union ballots, which in my opinion, opens the process up to intimidation.
I just read the overview from the AFL/CIO, I can see how it could help people like those that work for walmart, which fires any employee for any union like activity, to actually start earning a wage that they can live off of.
But the opening of the ballots I also do not agree with, if the workers choose not to organize their is nothing wrong with that, look at Ford, for years they never joined the UAW because they were getting competitive wages from the company already,
But there are circumstances where carriers are abusing the fact that their workforce is not organized, and if the EFCA does not go through as is, I hope parts of do.
Member of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), a mail man. We first supported Clinton and then went to Obama when he won the nomination. What do we hope gets accomplished in the upcoming Presidency?
Our survival. Republicans have been hell bent on privatizing the post office and UPS has one of the largest PACs out there and is pushing hard for it. We’ve had a lot more support from the dems.
We are sort of in the same boat, a lot of Reps want to privatize Amtrak, which they believe would relieve them of any costs and somehow still give the US a national rail system.

I’m not sure how the local longshoremen’s union likes it. They all make about $250,000 a year, which as we’re all aware, is targeted for a tax hike. Maybe union members will have a loophole.

I just think it’s damned UNAMERICAN, to do away with secret ballots. I mean, seriously, when George McGovern comes out against a union proposal…
