Uncooked Oats

can your body absorb the full nutrition from uncooked oats?

say, blended into a shake or something, you’ll still get the full nutritional value?

I’ve never had a problem with it. I mix a cup of oats with a half cup of powdered milk and some raisins.
Just add water and one of those packaged cups of applesauce.
It’s infinitely portable, only requires a water source, and since I drink it, it’s allowed at my desk. Where as if I cooked it, and used a spoon, my boss would have a beef.
I’ve been eating oatmeal like this for about fifteen years.

As to whether not being cooked impacts the absorbtion of nutrients, I really don’t know. But like I said, I’ve not had a problem with it in a decade nad a half.

Yup you should be fine might take your body some getting used to at first but it will digest them

I eat em uncooked all the time in various ways. Never had an issue and I can’t think of any reason why they would give your digestive system any real trouble. Great dash of fiber and some complex carbs.

I only eat them uncooked with milk raisins, prunes, and a little bit of brown sugar. Basically I mix them with anything. I hate how the oats taste when they are hot make the raisins taste sour.

Ive been going through my first bulking phase in years with great sucess for the last 4 weeks. Ive gained a good 12 lbs and fairly solid ones at that. One of new things that i have thrown into the mix is adding at least 3/4 cup of oats into the blender with every weight gain type shake that I drink. 12 lbs gained… now another 15 or so to go…
See Ya

thanks guys

I can’t let a thread about uncooked oats go by without saying something…

Uncooked oats are great! Give them a moment or two to soak after pouring some liquid on them… mmmmm. Yogurt will work too but it’s slower.

If you cook 1 cup of oats that is a lot of food. If you eat uncooked, that wants to swell up and???

When I was a kid on canoe trips I would not eat oatmeal porridge (yuck factor). I did eat a large amount of dry oats for the trip (7 to 10 days). I was happy, but sometimes did not crap for a week (with less than happy results). I did not understand the cause/effect then.

I would be concerned today eating a large amount of oats ;-}

LOL! Oats have a fair amount of fiber, so I really don’t think they are to blame.

In general, when we leave our comfortable habitat and go camping or whatnot, the change of environment and various habits can throw things off…

Quite true indeed. This can act to slow the absorbtion of other nutrients when that’s desirable as well.

It’s advisable to soak the oats in water for a few hours before consuming them. Some people do get extreme GI discomfort from the oats swelling after reaching the stomach. Some people can handle it fine, however. Just have to find what works for you.

That’s got nothing to do with the oats. You may have just not realized how much energy you were really exerting while you were out there. If you use all the food you consume for energy, nothing’s left to come out.

I have several friends in the military; it’s not uncommon to go the first two weeks of boot camp and not go once. It’s not from a lack of food, but from the amount of work they’re doing.

I think uncooked oats could contribute to constipation if you weren’t drinking enough since they’re dry and very high in soluble fiber.

I’d normally recommend soaking or cooking them, but if they don’t bother you, it’s not that big a deal. Theoretically, even old-fashioned oats have been pre-cooked. To roll them, they are first steamed and cut.
