Actually, you Brits were pretty benevolent at this colonizing thing (except when starving the Irish and the Indians in Bengal). The Portuguese and the French were much much worse.

Yes and no. While after the invasion the new ruling elite were French/Norman - Richard the Lionheart famously spent less than six months in England and spoke only French - the population as a whole remained the same, that is the product of successive invasions before that. As for the English language, Alexandre Dumas put it memorably: English is just badly pronounced French.
