Actually, this perfectly illustrates the differing nature of Shiite and Sunnite terrorism.
“I’ll stop blowing up Americans if you let me sell coke” - it seems that someone in the US administration cut a deal. After all, earning billions from selling drugs is much more appealing to these guys than getting yourself blown up.

Well, US long-term interests would have been much better served through an alliance with Iran that this perverse relationship with the Saudis and Pakistanis - Shiites are always up for a deal.
But like everything, Obama knew what should have been done, he just didn’t have the balls/courage to go all out and just ended with the worst possible downside of these timid attempts.

Why should we ally with either SA or Iran? Sunnis or Shiites? There’s literally no right answer.
The only reason to care about that part of the world is oil, nukes (Israel, Pakistan, Iran)… and maybe the Suez Canal. We can drill our own oil and can intervene if there’s trouble with the Suez. Why do we keep spending blood and treasure on useless sandy flyover country?
I’m all for letting them continue killing each other.

And since when did Kurds become these wild-eyed radicals? Ford is hoping you won’t ask that question, because the answer blows his social-conservative argument clean outta the water. A century ago, the Kurds were the most primitive, patriarchal, tribal group in the region. They were bandits, nomads, free-lance enforcers, easily hired (and then disposed of) by groups like the Turkish junta when it went looking for killers to finish off the troublesome Armenian minority.
Cultures change very quickly, when they see it’s in their interests to do so. The Kurds have changed faster than anyone imagined they could. I saw it happening in Sulaimaniya. And the Arab population of Raqqa will change just as quickly, if they see that feminist/secular life is a better offer than the reactionary fantasyland of Islamic State. In fact, young Arab women in northern Syria have already started joining up, rejecting the whole patriarchal order which Ford wants you to believe is eternal and unchangeable, part of Arabic genetics.

Trump has a plan for defeating ISIS in 30 days he just wasn’t going to tell anyone.
“Trump tells a crowd in Fort Dodge, Iowa, that he has been avoiding questions about his plans for ISIS because he doesn’t “want the enemy to know.” He adds, “I know more about ISIS than the generals do. Believe me.”
Let’s be honest about the US military generals for a second. They probably don’t know much about ISIS. I have no reason not to believe Trump knows more than them on it. He said believe me. That’s why the 30 day plan is going to be so great.
We can’t tell anyone when the 30 day victory plan starts because we don’t want the enemy to know. Tomorrow? Christmas? April 7? One day the 30 day plan will begin and ISIS will be gone. Maybe it’s a New Years Resolution like losing 5 pounds in 30 days or going on a 30 day detox?
Either way I would hate to be a member of ISIS when his secret plan kicks in especially on day 30 of that plan.
