Have we ever really had a clear, precise and successful policy towards the ME though?
At least in contemporary times it seems it’s been: “bomb the living shit out of some people, give some other people a bunch of military gear and money, saber rattle about Iran, and hope for the best”
Kasich is a great leader. If he had won the GOP primary, it would have marked the first time I voted R in a POTUS election. He also would have been OUTSTANDING at encouraging bipartisan efforts IMO.
I’m so bitter about the patriot act though… So bitter.
DO you think, sans something like a 9/11, that the majority of the people would stand behind these guys?
I mean shit, he was a RINO no doubt and likely would have instituted an “assault” rifle ban, but I think Romney would have made a pretty good POTUS. If only he and trump could have switched places in 2012 and 2016.
Would the world be better place if Kasich accepted Trump team’s offer of a “the all-powerful VP in charge of foreign and domestic policy” and left Trump with tweets and media spats?
PS Kasich and I are cousins four times removed so I guess that’s enough for me to guarantee his hypothetical greatness…
Yes, it was an awful piece of legislation that was born out of the fear of the time.
9/11 is the single most impactful external event of my lifetime so I don’t think I can really answer that question. It’s difficult to image what Bush’s term(s) would have been like without 9/11 let alone what the nation would have been looking for in a POTUS without the war on terror existing.
Ya, I voted for Romney I think he would have been a much better POTUS than Trump.
I don’t think so. Anyone that joins team Trump either gets fully on board or leaves in disgrace. The risk of alienating someone like Kasich from being elected to public office feels like too much risk and not enough reward to me.
Furthermore I think Trump genuinely needs a “yes man” at his side to function. I don’t see Kasich ever being alright as a yes man to a guy like Trump.
I don’t love every one of Kasich’s actions over his entire career, of course, and he has a few things that I really disliked, but he was by far my preferred choice of the crowd that were up for the Presidency in this past primary cycle. Along with pfury, had he been the R candidate in the general, I’d have voted for him in a heartbeat. He seems like a fundamentally reasonable and intelligent guy, and talks a good game about bipartisan cooperation in the name of getting something useful done.
Take this with a grain of salt (since he’s a pol and all), but I’ve met Kasich twice in my life now. Both times he’s come off as a genuine guy. He’s not always right, and he’s not always smart, but he plays far less political BS games than most of the mainstream pols that I’ve seen.
In hindsight, that’s probably a very large part of why he had no chance to lock the R nomination.
I think he would have been a much better POTUS than many.
He was in the Gang of 8 right? Kiss of death right there for many in the GOP base.
Majority meaning we’d have a decent plurality of people putting tribalism aside to actually give credit where it’s due.
Shit, that is the low bar I’ll take right now. Since 43, I don’t really see that all that much from the party (or it’s voters) that didn’t win the executive.
They don’t and the McCain love is all bullshit too.
It makes a lot of sense the disillusioned would run into camp trump with glee, but in order to agree with that, you’d have to take a critical look at the left, that many are yet to do… Or maybe more than I think have already, and it really is the vocal fringe that keeps all the focus on it.
I remember how utterly disgusted Sloth was with Trump during that time period. Such a shame that so many other evangelical Christians were so empty on him.
Kasich was the one guy who refused to “forgive” Trump after Trump got the nomination. That easily elevated him above the rest of the Repub crowd.
I was pro Cruz vs. the rest of the non-Trump field, but Cruz lost my respect after giving in and endorsing Trump. Geez, after the crap Trump threw at him (and his family no less), have a little self-respect…
I really like Cruz, as a senator. Not the biggest fan of him as a POTUS.
Really bright guy but:
Too quick to sell out, IMO.
He sucks on the environment, and is a wee bit too much in the evangelical’s pocket.
Hey, one other good thing about trump, maybe the right will finally realize that the “religious right” isn’t going to turn around and vote for the D’s, so they don’t have to pander so god damn much to them.
My point is that there’s no reason to wait - they can run the table on the most important issue (to them), which has none of the complications of Obama care repeal. There’s nothing holding them back - except Trump. If Rubio or Kasich won, tax reform would be done and old news at this point.
I don’t disagree about others being incompetent, but the issue - painful as it appears to be for you to admit, for whatever reason - is Trump. Even a “perfect” bill has to now be subjected to the drunken animal spirits of Trump, his ignorance of policy, and his mood swings.
Also, not to dismissed, is that a normal, reasonably competent Republican president would have pushed to get the bill done, been the driver of it. Trump’s not driving it - he has no idea what to drive.
Weird - “all in” means, to me, wanting to repeal Obamacare, not repeal Obama care regardless of how.
You’re kinda fast to accuse of being intentionally dishonest these days, don’t you think? In any event:
Ok. That’s a ridiculously stupid litmus test for “all in”, but whatever.
Agree. Gotta look for something silvery amidst all the darkness.
If Trump actually wins the Repub nomination again, and actually gets re-elected again, what little faith I have in the human race is going pfffft. Unless HRC is the opponent again…
What does it mean that the person who has these qualities couldn’t crack the rotation? Everyone talks about sensible, reasonable public servants - either party - like they’re unicorns in the sense of their rarity, and sadly, I guess that’s true. And here we get one available in Kasich - and he can’t overcome a sociopathic toddler to win the nomination.
