Trump intentionally garnered the support of Nazis/White supremecists, yes. To me, he saw that the number of people who hold these views were higher than most people realized, and he took advantage.
He had a ludicrous number of opportunities to disavow them, and didn’t (probably mostly for the purpose of winning the election). I hold him responsible for his lack of action in the same way I hold Obama responsible for supporting BLM after it had already begun to be bastardized by extremists.
What does it mean to be an “out of touch old white guy” in this context? And more importantly, is it acceptable to you for the POTUS to operate according to whatever principles/beliefs constitute the state of being one?
We have a friend of the family that is 80ish or so. Every so often she’ll drop the N bomb and her daughter will say something like “Mom, you can’t say that!” and she’ll respond “Honey, that’s just what we called them growing up.” She’s also the kindest most generous person I’ve ever met and there is zero malice whatsoever in her use of the N-word. She’s just completely oblivious to the reality of 2017.
And really that isn’t an uncommon thing. I’m only in my 30s and growing up it was perfectly acceptable to call other kids “retards” or “fags”, which get’s you skewered today. It has nothing to do with being malicious (in this context) it’s just being out of touch with or not caring about the shift in the accepted vernacular of a given time.
You may well be right. I have relations who are similar in their dotage. Assuming you are right, do you have an opinion regarding the second, related question I asked?
It’s an interesting question. I think the POTUS has a responsibility to all Americans of all colors, creeds, and religions; however, I don’t expect any POTUS to fundamentally change who they are because they’ve been elected to this position.
So, my answer is, I think it’s okay as long as the POTUS is fulfilling his obligation to all Americans free of personal bias that arose from being “______” (insert whatever, out of touch old white guy, etc…).
I was referring to his comment about black people attending tennis matches reported by the NYT. That was the worst thing his girlfriend could recall. While it is true that tennis/hockey/polo/golf are the whitest sports going, it’s still uncouth to point that out.
I was on a Southwest flight with my father in law who is 76 years old. While we’re boarding I noticed that all 4 of the flight attendants were black guys. Not only that, they all looked like they workout. My father in law (who has hearing loss from being a corpsman in Vietnam) announces to the whole plane: “Hey, did you see all 4 stewards are giant black guys?”
“Shut up! And don’t order any drinks later.”
He had no idea why saying that out loud might be insensitive. This guy sewed black guys back together in wartime and has no prejudicial tendencies whatsoever. It’s just a sign of the times.
As far as Presidents being out of touch. Here’s the problem. Presidents have to have done something, displayed some sort of leadership and accomplishment (relevant or not) to get the office. Most guys/gals running (exception of BHO) are 50+. So that means you aren’t likely to be super hip or up on all of the most recent social no-no’s. Most candidates have spent their time doing stuff, not keeping up with trends. So we can allow for some quirks here and there since we nearly always elect seasoned citizens.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Trump said something like “I love black culture. I listen to Run DMC.”
