This is essentially my view as well. I don’t think Trump is a card-carrying member of the KKK, but latent racism/implicit bias is alive-and-well in the US (also as evidenced by my family members) and I think Trump capitalized on that very well. Trump’s soft “disavowal” of the rash of hate crimes after the election is a good example.
Ironically, this supposed “golden age of greatness” was also the period of the biggest US involvement in world affairs. The Marshall plan that rebuilt Europe and ensured 70 years of peace on the continent just being one of the examples.
Isolationism on the other hand hark backs to 1930ies, Great Depression and Lindbergh’s “America First”, or as dr. Seuss (yes, dr. Seuss) pointedly explained:
You are not following me. I’m not holding Trump accountable for who supported him. I’m holding him accountable for running a campaign of vilification and demonization of marginalized groups–specifically, for demagoguing Mexicans and Muslims.
One thing that gets missed (not directed at you B_G) in this is acknowledging that any company that is going to spend hundreds of millions to either build or retrofit plants in the US are going to utilize the most modern equipment and technology available; that means heavy automation. So while some jobs will be created, of course, to run the plant, fix equipment, etc., it will be nowhere near what a lot people assume it will be.
I am fully with USMC on this. It’s changing, extremely rapidly, and I can’t fathom how we would ever make up the lost manufacturing jobs we once had.
A palingenetic clownshow built explicitly on pining for that past is stupid at best (but we all know – whether we admit it or not – that many of the most important component forces within Trumpism are much more sinister than mere stupidity).
If you think it’s bad now, wait until driverless-vehicle technology starts to penetrate the workforce. I read somewhere (sorry, can’t come up with the citation at the moment) that 1 in 6 American men make their living, in whole or in part, via driving a vehicle. I’m afraid the worker displacement/upheaval caused by driverless technology may dwarf that caused by manufacturing automation.
So this 70 years of peace combined with more or less rebuilding Europe should have some value on the Continent, shouldn’t it?
Instead of decades- long criticism of US not providing the same cradle to grave nanny state, or crying because the US states it can no longer fully protect Europe against Russia without more financial renumeration, or screeching how racist we are as the whole of Europe suffers a soft invasion destined to destroy its very heritage, if unchecked.
Tell me why we should continue this one sided love affair?
Comes from a guy that tried to explain that Bannon wasn’t an antisemite.
I know that @Jewbacca believes that Trump is/will be pro-Israel with Ivanka/Jared and all that, but this is the real face of the alt-right and their head honcho Bannon is calling the shots in the White House, Trump notwithstanding.
Yep, I expect we’ll start hearing about this during the 2024 election. And the move to electric vehicles and driverless technology will hit many industries beyond just those involved in driving. Insurance, auto repair, auto parts, law enforcement…it’s a long list.
Do you seriously think Truman decided to rebuild Europe for humanitarian reasons? That’s stupid. He built it because he knew that a stable/peaceful Europe provides a crucial transatlantic ally and…wait for it…keeps America safe. Do you remember what happens the last time the US withdrew from world affairs? From trade to counter terrorism European countries have been an asset to the US.
Do you seriously think all Dem/Rep presidents from Truman to Obama were wrong to support the transatlantic alliance?
So no one is asking for money from the Current Administration or for substantial funds for NATO (with much fanfare four (4) US tanks have arrived in Estonia), but the POTUS shouldn’t openly profess his love/admiration for a creepy spook/dictator.
Wait you think you’re in some sort of morally superior position when you support the displacement of the black worker by importing millions of Mexicans and Central Americans? Give me a break
