I look at those big plans and think “everything starts somewhere.”. Before Pittsburgh became a world building industrial giant it was an outpost on the farthest western boundary of “civilization”.
Oh yeah. I still think back to that convo we had about tungsten when I fire up the tig welder. That was an eye opener for me!
And we would definitely be over a barrel if one day China just said “Nope. You’re an enemy of our state. We don’t trade or negotiate with countries like yours”.
And it would take a whole lot of doing to get off of that barrel.
A short time ago President Trump said tariffs on Mexico and Canada were for generating revenue for the government. But deep down, all the true Trump-heads knew those tariffs were just a threat and a way to influence or “leverage” those countries into increased border security.
He didn’t really want to apply the tariffs, he just wanted the borders tightened. And the talk of the benefit of tax revenue was just theatrics to show foreign leaders how committed he was.
Then the foreigners did what he wanted and the tariffs went away.
Did the President “Lie” to the people of the US when he made it seem like he was serious about the benefits of the import tax, when he had no interest in actually collecting them?
Where does that leave us this time?
Are these new tariffs really, really about attracting foreign investment and rebuilding US manufacturing? Or is President Trump just playing up the benefits of import taxes to make himself seem committed, to put more pressure on foreign leaders again?
Anyone of any political bent that’s unjustly or maliciously imprisoned should be released. But bailing out violent agitators isn’t much different than pardoning
As an aside… what’s your opinion on these unstable losers keying Teslas on camera ??
Disagree, one has been found guilty of a crime and the other hasn’t. One is awaiting trial and the other is being punished for the crime they were found to have committed
The ONLY reason trump pardoned them was because he committed crime for him
Catch them if you can and fine them for the damage
Really it’s very, very stupid to be doing the damage to random teslas that have been purchased years ago for a variety of reasons.
This is akin to sitting on the freeway to bring eyes to your cause…. All it does is make people hate you and want your cause to die a swift death
I genuinely think trump thinks tariffs are the solution to a variety of problems, and are the thing that lead americas “gilded age” 100 years ago
Which is to say i dont think there is anything these countries can do to get the tariffs lifted. Trump thinks the tariffs are necessary to be in place for the betterment of America, i dont think they are a negotiating tool at this point to get Laos and Zimbabwe to drop their tariffs
The X factor with trump is that he absolutely can’t tolerate “losing”, so I don’t think there is going to be any amount of damage they do where he goes “okay enough is enough, they didn’t work out like I thought, let’s pull them”
He will always maintain a position that they just need more time, or need to be bigger, or some other thing that makes him right and everyone else wrong.
The super X factor (the is me entering speculation territory) is that even if he does reverse course I believe he has done lasting harm to Americas reputation. Countries are already on record saying our old relationship is over. The EU is looking for ways to get away from Americas military and economic influence. Various countries peoples are boycotting American goods, no tariffs needed.
And really who would want to do business with trumps America at this point? He could rip up the deal (just like he did with other precious deals America signed onto) and tariff your ass even more tomorrow
Can anyone in here genuinely say our reputation on the world stage is more positive than it was 3-6 months ago and that more people than ever want to do business with us?
Everyone loved it when the USA rolled over and played dead so vultures could pick at us for decades. If they’re upset about us stopping that, it will be their problem much more than it will be ours.
I believe this will be increasingly true as time passes. The strongest nations in Europe all seem to be on the same path we just turned away from, and things aren’t going so well for them.
On top of that, all of the anti-MAGA people have consistently shown themselves to be wrong in nearly every analysis they’ve offered, with 10 years of failed predictions under their belt.
Somehow, people are still ready to latch on to whatever they say.
Because the chart isnt tariffs on America, it’s tariffs (including currency manipulation and trade deficit). AKA if a country has no tariff on us, but we have a trade deficit with them, trump factored in whatever that number was and made that the number he used. Oh and whatever number he comes up with as their currency manipulation factor.
Also i dont think anything in my post had anything to do with that or that I said otherwise. I think trump doesn’t care what these other countries do at this point, he wants the tariffs in place because he thinks they do things good for America , not because he wants other countries to lower the tariffs he has on us. He thinks the tariffs “liberate us”
Unless I missed him saying that a country could get rid of their tariffs by dropping their tariffs (including trade deficit and currency manipulation) on us. Did he say that ?
You are correct in so far as no one REALLY knows what anyone thinks, but I am going off what the guy says and does
Why do you suppose he called it liberation day? Could it be because he thinks the tariffs will liberate us?
He has said they will return us to the gilded age of the pre 1920s
He has said they will bring back manufacturing and liberate us from being beholden to other countries for things
He has said they may even lead to taxes going away (which would make no sense if manufacturing came back so much we stopped importing, thus reducing the tariff income)
He has said enough things about them that I either know what he thinks about them or he’s lying about what he thinks so thoroughly I have no idea nor does anyone else.
How has America rolled over and been picked to death? Are we still not THE global super power with our fingers in every continent in the world influencing it to Our whim ?
Do we not have 10 fold the military influence of every other country on earth?
How have we been picked to death and wield so much influence and power ?
My local public school is presently “educating” about 2,000 students who speak almost no English, along with providing for the adults in their family. The idea being that we have a moral obligation to do this for as many non-Americans as can be trafficked into the state.
We’ve been subsidizing the defense of Europe for 80 years, not counting WWI, WWII and the interwar years.
We’ve been keeping trade lanes open for the entire planet with our Navy.
Unfavorable trade deals have long been the expectation when dealing with the USA. If tariffs are a bad thing, why does everyone have them on our exports?
Those are just the first ones that come to mind, without combing through all of the USAID boondoggles.
I don’t think we do, not with China’s navy and shipbuilding being what it is today. Did you by chance hear about our Afghanistan withdrawal?
Because of our fundamental advantages we’ve cultivated across centuries that have not yet been eroded by the slow Socialist revolution so much of Europe seems to be continuing with.
Is this not the situation America has chosen to cultivate. You are speaking as if this has happened TO America, and not that America has done this themselves
We derive great benefit and influence from all of the things you describe. Everything had cost and benefits associated with it, so to act like we are getting taken advantage of when in fact we are the one who has decided to do all those things willingly (and to incur the cost along with reaping the benefit)
