It was not always among friends. The jokes were meant to hurt feelings and make others laugh or to make the person angry right before fighting. Racial/ethnic jokes are just easy. The majority of people are not racist.

Real racists don’t code their language nearly as often as progressives would have you believe. The entire reason progressive socialists call attention to what they call “dog whistles” is to categorize everyone who doesn’t share their ideology as racist. Same tactic with nearly everything else, like transgender ideology.
Racists aren’t hard to spot. They always make themselves known with their patterns.
Democratic Socialists are racists, as they are deep believers in race-based public policy. These DEI notions are entirely incompatible with the concept of equal protection under the law.
When people wonder why we’re so “polarized” now compared to decades ago, it is due to the introduction of so many ideas that are incompatible with the basic concepts Americans have fought too many wars to agree at.
