Truly Liberal?

So we don’t have a right to respond to a joke? Some people actually believe this is what liberals think, and while some of it is true, it’s twisted into fucked up ways of saying it.

You all have the right to do whatever the heck you want. I just want to disuade anyone from having a coronary episode trying to respond, that’s all.

There’s WAY too little humor from the anti-Bush folk here (and I’m anti-Bush on a whole slew of things. I’m just a true Conservative-part-Libertarian).

Anyone with half a brain and a dull sense of humor can see the lighter side of my post (I hope).

Yes, I saw the joke. But in the way it was presented, it still created a message that all liberals think this way (regardless of you explanation or context; propaganda works this way) which I sought to dissuade (when I could).

You could have very easily mocked the morons in PETA, the anti-gun nuts, the global warming nuts, ect… without labeling them all “liberal”. The term, for the most part, does not apply. Neither does conservative, really. These kinds of things just add to the stereotype.

And now I feel like a jackass… fuck it.
Jokes are jokes, this was a joke, I’m not actually offended.

Lol.

I’m glad you see it as a joke. You shouldn’t feel like a jackass at all. I could’ve posed it more clearly as a joke so there’d be no misunderstsndings. You never know what’s in a guy’s head when he’s typing something right?. One of the only bad parts about debate in print.

I’m sure there are just as many anti-Conservative e-mails floating around. And with just as many exaggerations.

Ya know, if we all met up somewhere to kick each other’s asses over this forum stuff, we’d all end up buddies in the end (insert gay jokes) and laughing about it. Except for Shamus, that’s a tough call.

I’m sure most of you bright lads here on the Politics and World Issues forum already know this, but for those few of you that haven’t caught on yet…

Democrates are not liberals and Republicans are not conservatives.

It is the same thing as when Harris started the “Why Gay Marriage is Wrong” thread… it was obviously a joke, but the Jesus freaks jumped all over it.

It is standard chain email garbage so conservatives can pat each other on the back and demonize the “libs”. There is much truth in jest.

Not too mention that very few people toe the party line- I am anti gun control, and think the government sucks as much as big businesses do.

Meh. We’d probably have some good discussion, but in person most of you would dismiss my opinions (on both sides) because of my age. I like this way better!

Not to sound like a complete hippy but this is what John Lennon refered to as total comunication–or something like that. Basically it comes down to the idea that we should have the ability to comunicate without a preconcieved notion of a persons age, race, nationailty, sex etc. In my mind its a good thing–for the obvious reasons.

To be truely liberal one has to believe in a philosphy that supports the freedom of thought–though, you may not agree with those thoughts. Conservatism seeks to maitain the status quo which historically is favored by the ruling class.

By this definition the US is a liberal country and this is why we love it.[/quote]

Ironically, you’re absolutely right. I even heard that the British crown was known referred to George Washington as “liberal”.

Here’s the catch though:

Somehow, the term liberal got tossed into our lexicon as a pejorative. This was a big mistake in a way, as “libs” love to point out how the dictionary definition is “one who is progressive”. In fact, most people that get identified as “libs” nowadays are actually socialists or even commies if you prefer. Since the ideals
the US was founded on are the antithesis
of socialism, I guess the progressive definition kind of fits(although most “libs” are progressing this country straight to hell). The people who understand what America was founded on centuries ago cling to the ideals of our founders and I guess that makes us conservative, by strict definition.

This is why I no longer use the term “liberal” if I can help it. It allows the anti-american, socialist left to muddle the language and claim some type of connection to the founders, as they were certainly progressive thinkers. Its more fun to switch it around and tell them they would actually be conservatives
in Russia where they could bow to Karl Marx.
