I don’t hate black people. My first girlfriend was black and I’ve dated MANY black women over the years - almost married one. I did marry a Latina. Several of my close friends to this day are black. It was my friendship and relationship with an older black electrician that got me into the electrical apprenticeship and allowed me to succeed in my current career. I listen to hip hop music when I am in the mood, am completely fluent in “ebonics”, and know how to give a proper handshake in the hood.

Only I haven’t had the luxury of having the government or social programs catch me when I fell. When I had hard times, there was no organization for me to turn to. When I needed help to pay for school, there was no “Caucasian American scholarship” available to me, even though I was in the same boat as many under privileged African Americans - so I learned a trade instead of going to college. When I was subjected to racial violence (that on several occasions almost killed me) by black citizens, police officers and prison guards, there was no NAAWP for me to turn to.
But for some fucking reason, it hasn’t held me back. You know why? Because I learned to think for myself, to trust only myself, to count ONLY on myself and knew that I had absolutely NO safety net. So I was motivated. I tried a LITTLE bit harder than the next guy. I took responsibility for my life and I didn’t blame anyone for my decisions or circumstance (because if I had, no one would listen - I’m white!).
I’m tired of hearing black people say, “the white man is keeping us down”. It’s bullshit. Every individual has the power to change their own life for the better. It’s the collective “victim mentality” that is keeping many otherwise bright African Americans with tons of potential down. There is absolutely NO reason why ANY person of ANY color cannot find a way to become moderately successful in today’s United States of America. There are SO many ways and SO many paths that one can take. From college, the military, trades, starting a business, the whole internet and social media thing… There is PLENTY of opportunity for ANYONE to take advantage of. You can be an online graphic designer and no one would even know WHAT color you are - you could be GREEN for fuck’s sake! The only think keeping an individual from becoming moderately successful is the lack of motivation inside that individual. And guess what? That isn’t a quality specific to ANY race!
So instead of preaching about all the discrimination (real or imagined) how about talking about opportunity? Stop giving people an excuse for being mediocre and demand that they find the best within themselves, whatever that may be? Instead of being a “victim”, how about using some personal power and claiming the success that is your birthright as an American?
