Top 5 WAR movies

  1. Good Morning Vietnam
  2. Full Metal Jacket
  3. The Patriot

A war movie that I didn’t see anyone mention is “Paths of Glory”. It’s an old WWI movie that Stanley Kubrick directed. I believe it was based on actual events. It’s very good and I bought it at Best Buy for around $9.00

Has anyone ever seen "The Lost Battalion"? It was an A&E movie that was made around 2000. It was pretty recent and Rick Schroder was the main character. Also very good, and based on actual events during WWI. I have never been able to locate it on DVD anywhere. I guess there's always the internet, but I can't even find the movie at video store to rent. Anyone located the movie?

Black Hawk Down was friggin’ intense. One of my girlfriends took me to see it in the theatre, and we were clinging to each other the whole time like our lives depended on it. Blew me away. As far as older war movies, I always got a kick out of The Big Red One and The Dirty Dozen. I guess I like Lee Marvin’s gruff no-nonsense let’s-kill-everybody characters. Okay, that’s three… uh, have to throw in Saving Private Ryan, that was an emotional tour-de-force. And lastly, Braveheart. Man, I’m a Scotsman by lineage, and I would love nothing more than to paint my face blue and hack the heads off all you damn Englishman!!!

(just kidding, limeys!)

I think you all forgot the amazing:

  1. Heartbreak Ridge!!!

And the pretty good

  1. Zulu
  2. Blackhawk Down
  3. We Were Soldiers
  4. Cross of Iron

Thin Red Line
Paths of Glory
All Quiet on the Western Front

I forgot about All Quiet on the Western Front. That is a good movie, and a damn good book.

Has anyone else here played Axis and Allies?

  1. Rambo: First Blood
  2. Platoon
  3. The Dirty Dozen
  4. Full Metal Jacket
  5. Saving Private Ryan

Honorable Mention: The Great Escape, The Deer Hunter, Kelly’s Heros, The Patriot.

“Master and Commander” and “Blackhawk Down” loved both of 'em.

  1. Gettysburg (its a mini-series)
  2. Midway
  3. We were soldiers
  4. Patton
  5. A Bridge too far
    (I like the strategy ones)

I had forgotten “A Bridge Too Far”…

That’s a good one. It follows what amounted to the largest airborne assault in history (albiet ill fated).

Early previews seem to indicate that “Troy” may be a good one…

Mufasa

Seige on Fire Base Glory by far the best Vietnam movie out there. Much more realistic than many of the other movies.

Night of the Shooting Stars, an Italian movie from 1982.

Rent the DVD, the colors are better than on the old VHS copies. I’ve shown it to 3 people so far.

I just drudged up this old thread because I’ve discovered this movie and it is one of the best I’ve ever seen.

Full Metal Jacket

(pardon my obsessive personality)

Saving Private Ryan, Full Metal Jacket, Black Hawk Down, Platoon, for intensity and the most realism you can get from a movie those cannot be beat! Another excellent movie not mentioned yet is The Beast, it is about a Russian tank crew that gets lost in a valley in afghanistan with the mujahadeen(sp?) hot on their trail. Jason Patrick is the main character. A very good war movie!

Patton
Midway
Band of Brothers
Spartacus
South Park the Movie

I would have to add “Behind Enemy Lines” to that list. One of the best representations of the effects of war. When the lead charater is lying in the unearthed mass grave!

  1. Mars Attacks
  2. War of the Roses
  3. Starship Troopers
  4. Commando
  5. Up the Academy
