I can’t believe this BS is coming up again. How the fuck do you have an across the board definition of “overall fitness”? Fitness for WHAT? Define fit, then we can go from there. Until there is a definition of that word that we all agree on, you can’t compare a strongman competitor to an ironman. They would suck big monkey-tits at each other’s sports.
This is what I said…FTW!
…I do believe the OP contained the words “My definition for fitness in this case a was a well rounded blend of speed, power, strength, muscular endurance, power endurance, and stamina.”
That’s a nice generalization, but it still doesn’t set any specific standards for any of those.

That statement leaves virtually everything up for interpretation, solving nothing. You could, however, say “I wonder which athletes would be best at running 1 mile, repping out 225 on bench press and 315 on squat, rock climbing 50 feet vertically, and doing bodyweight pullups?”

But then everything could change completely if someone decided that a 3 mile run would be better, or repping out bench at 185 and squat at 225, or climbing a 100 foot rock wall, or doing pullups with 90 lbs added to bodyweight. Which person is right about either version (or countless other variations) being the “ideal” test of physical fitness? Who is to say which is better? And that is why even starting a discussion like this based on broad generalizations is pointless.

I’ll agree both basketball and hockey players are great athletes, why not watch some videos of other random cool sports that require some skill and athleticism? I was really impressed the first time I went to a cyclocross race.

Cyclocross is intense. The lactic acid you feel in your legs after a race is incredible. I use to race cat 3 cyclocross in the off season which nicely complimented by road racing in the spring /summer. The cyclocross races are flat out from the gun and there few moments if any, where you can coast and take it easy. The sport is quite popular in northern Europe.

The first thing I saw at the first cross race I watched was a guy on the ground with his head between his knees puking. His five year old son was standing right next to him watching. I’m going to have to buy a cross bike some time just to try it out.
