Tiny Freak: A New Start

Yay!!! Our Tiny Freak is back!!

And I’ll say, that’s some strong training despite getting over your bronchial funk. Awesome!

I’ve been meaning to try those Sumo “rack pulls” but haven’t been able to fit them into my training. My lockout is “soft” :frowning:

As per always, I’ll be following!

I got bronchitis a few years ago and it really does suck. I was coughing up bloody phlegm at one point. Not nice.

Still, that’s a pretty impressive workout considering. Just pace yourself until you fel 100%.

That was a close one. I almost went full FRIENDSHIPMOTHAFUKKINREVOKED on your ass.

You got lucky.

Kimba: glad you’re back and getting back to training. The running will come back quickly–all that lovely ground work you laid strengthening your connective tissues is still there. The cardiovascular fitness is all that has been set back and that will come back quickly. The heart is a very resilient and willing muscle.

Pulls looked smooth and steady.

i don’t know anything about pulling sumo but they looked pretty good to me. you really do have some long arms and legs! how wide is your stance? do you feel that in your hips? i play a bit with sumo pulls but don’t really have any idea of what i’m supposed to be doing at all…

right back on track. nice pulls and killer arm definition.

lula, thanks for the welcome back. What I discovered is that four weeks on the couch didn’t significantly affect my weight or my lean-ness. That surprised me. It did affect my endurance though.

LastStand, oh you are so right: bronchitis IS the devil. I still have my trusty inhaler close to six weeks after it started. Yikes!

Maschy, I’m not quite sure what a “soft” lockout is but I’ll bet you make it look desirable. The rack pulls have helped me somewhat with form issues, but I wouldn’t say they have made me stronger at pulling. My sticking point is the floor.

Cal, indeed I’m pacing myself. The last thing in the world I want is a relapse.

Hallowed, every time I see your smokin’ hot avi in here, I get lucky.

Nadia, thanks for your encouraging words. So far, the only setback I’ve noticed (other than the endurance and speed) is that my side stitches are back. Not to the extent they used to hurt, but noticeable. I’m assuming something in my innards got a bit deconditioned and needs to be toughened back up.

Joe, thanks. I thought the rack pulls looked OK, but the floor is my problem on form and everything else!

alexus, my feet are at the rings so my stance isn’t really wide. I actually don’t feel this in my hips, but someone with a different anatomic construction could certainly not enjoy this position.

Frenchie, its kind of a bitch working so hard just for baseline. But that is balanced out by an abiding gratefulness to be back in the game at whatever level.

Friday night’s training was bench night:

Bench press (3’s Day)
Bar 1 x 5
67.5# 1 x 3
77.5# 1 x 3
87# 1 x 3 <–last two, butt off bench

BBB 62# 5 x 10
supersetted with

1-armed bent over DB rows
37.5# 5 x 10

Dips
BW 1 x 5 <–felt hard

Its coming back, slowly. The dips weren’t stellar, but I’ll try them again next week and hopefully my stamina will have improved.

Yesterday’s training was a 2.5 mile run. Longer than last time and a bit faster, so that is going on the upward path too.

Kimba, I was thinking about what makes my butt come of the bench while benching heavy and how it can be stopped. I think when I make my back bigger I can still use my legs but not lift my butt. I’ll try it next week and let you know if that adjustment is important (for me fwiw).

Good job coming back from illness!

So let me posit a question. If your form is better on rack pulls and you struggle from the floor why not just switch out Dls for rack pulls for good? I don’t think you have a desire to compete so fundamentally you don’t have to do DL’s.

Spider, my butt comes off the bench when I’m just too weak to get the bar up without a full body press-up. I’d love to hear about your experiment though.

Joe, although I don’t have a goal to compete there is something so…satisfying about pulling a heavily loaded bar off of the floor. It just wouldn’t be the same feeling of accomplishment doing only rack pulls. I’m OK with being conservative on form issues, while always plugging away at those suckers.

Today’s training was a 3 mile run. I was SUPER EXCITED to be able to run a “normal” distance for me. I also ran every mile a bit under 9:30 min/mile which is getting closer to my usual pace. Very grateful for this, am I.

I admire your thoughts about pulling from the floor, just thought I’d ask.

everything okay here?

Joe, thanks for checking in on me.

Recovery from my lung issues is going slower than I would like. A day of skiing (well, a couple of hours before I had to quit) knocked me off my game for a couple of lifting sessions. I’m hoping to be back at it tomorrow night.

Ugh. Must be so frustrating for you!

Fingers crossed the tiny freak returns to strength ASAP.

sorry it’s been awhile since I’ve checked in, busy training/working/house-wife’in.

where’s your weakness in sumo pulls?

Hope the lungs decided to cooperate soon.

Thanks lula and lil for stopping by.

lil, my weakness in sumo pulls is the damned floor. I’ve never yet failed a lift if I can break it off the floor.

The lungs are getting better, but snail-like slowly. Yesterday for the first time I was able to run and feel good while running. 4 miles at a pace close to a “normal” pace. So things are headed in the right direction. I still need to use my inhaler though. :frowning:

That is normal on a sumo pull, I’m the exact same way. If fact, that’s why sumo rack pulls are rarely done.

Pull sumo from a deficit and do some extra wide sumo stiff leg pulls. These should help off the floor.

sorry to hear about still being sick
colds hang around a long time at the change of seasons
