Time to Buy a TV!

tigerdirect.com best prices. might get a 37" 1080p for around 500 from them.

I recall a thread about a year ago and someone mentioned that they test TV’s at the factory and some perform better than others. The best ones go to the specialty high end stores and the ones that still work just not as well go to wal-mart or somesuch. We’re talking the exact same model but for some reason some are better than others, WTF?

I’m holding out till xmas.

Robot or human? exactly in the price range you want. surprisingly at walmart

I’m a little lost on the 7-8 foot viewing distance and wanting a 32" screen. I sit around 8-10 feet from mine, and got a 55" 1080p samsung plasma. Was 950.

Remember, 32" widescreen watching non HD stuff will look like prolly around 28" CRT’s because there those damned black strips not being used.

I prefer Toshiba, had one for 16 years, bought it when my daughter was born. It is actually with my son at college. 2 years ago bought the 50" plasma toshiba, picture is out of this world. 1080 HD football games are the best.

I’m bumping this thread because it’s time for ME to buy one.

I’m going to get a 46" and I’m willing to buy the best one short of the jump to 3D.

Panosonic, Samsung, LG, 1080P, 240hz, LCD, LED, Plasma(slightly more) are just a little less than the Sharp Aquos and Sony Bravia, I think there is one more brand out there with a cheesy name lol.

I will be playing video games but not a whole lot, no internet either so I think two usb ports will be fine. I will be sitting fairly close with a fair bit of light in the room. It’s upstairs in the living room which sucks.

  1. Is it worth the extra two or three hundred clams to buy the Sharp or Sony?

  2. Should I wait untill after xmas and hold out for a cheaper price?

I’m thinking of phoning a few stores to ask them what kind of price protection they offer. In other words if I buy one before xmas at their rock bottom price and see it in an after new years rock bottom price flyer I’m going to be pissed lol.

Ultimatly is does come down to going to the store and seeing for myself but I just wanted to ask anyway.

Thanks

Heh seems like everyone is buying TVs this year.

I’m personally looking at the Panasonic Viera G25s. Go ahead and Google for reviews, I think CNET has them as the best bang for the buck TV for 2010.

I have a 32" LG has a great picture. Cost 700$ 2 years ago. Should be pretty cheap considering I bought it in Canada so thats like $14.35 American

Depends how much you want to spend.

If I could get a 46’ from the US, I’d look at the Sony XBR range - my friend got one imported from the US and the picture is sublime. But, I think it was around $2200.

Ultimately, I’d wait till January (the sales are usually good, at least in the UK they are), and go in store to compare. Also, the full LED TV’s are super thin, very impressive.

I think Vizio is your best bet. I picked up mine at Walmart for like $600 CND. It’s a 32’ LCD with 1080p HDMI TV. It was the best bang for my buck. Plus it had better specs than a Philips TV that was there for like $800 and 2" bigger. Better specs as in contrast rate and refresh rate.

things to keep in mind

refresh rate: you’re gonna want one thats low right now avg i believe is around 5-6 ms
Contrast ratio: the higher the better, deeper colors etc
Hz: kinda goes along with the refresh rate… it prevents the pixelation that occurs sometimes with sports etc
tv’s in the store are in a demo mode and are kept at a higher brightness in order to attract you to the tv, when ure watching at home u prolli won’t keep it as bright, so just be wary, u don’t wanna get the brightest tv cuz it might not be the best fit.
viewing dist: i think optimal viewing dist is 1 foot for every 10 inches. so if you have a small room its not gonna bode well to get a 60+" and if you have a big room a 32" is gonna look inadequate.

On that note i’d suggest a vizio brand television i have one from costco (47") for my living room thats about 6-7 feet from the couch and i have no complaints, PS3 looks great on it.

also unless ure a video-phile its gonna look good regardless

I sold tv’s for 10yrs back in the day. Their are only 2 tv’s worth truly investing in. Sony & Mitsubishi. However w/your price range, the Vizio, Toshiba, or JVC will work.

The only problem here is everyone will have a opinion based on what they’ve owned.

This is true. I wish to have my Sony tv from home while at school but money wise Vizio was a good choice for my self.

The Sony back home is like 4 years old and is still top quality.
