Thoughts on Sugar Intake?

I’m sure most of us already know the problems associated with diets high in sugar, the USDA recommends no more than 40 grams of sugar per day, however most of our high calorie diets probably hit that limit by lunch time since everything has sugar in it these days. I personally try to cut out sugar by making my own food, not buying cookies and other snacks, and eating less fruit and more vegetables.

What are your thoughts on sugar?

Sugar content of fruit is fine, in general. Yeah, fruit likes grapes have ‘high’ sugar content but it’s not really what they’re getting at…

The whole ‘sugar = bad’ concept comes from ADDED sugar in stuff like soda, pastries, candy bars etc.

I definitely agree with that article, HFCS is the product of the devil

…good use of the reverse goldwin law

I’m not an expert so I’ll just pass along what my nutritionist said for comments. She said that some fruit, like apples, have high sugar yet their net effect on the body is to lower insulin level’s because of the way fructose is bound in the pulp. If you separate the ~28g sugar from the apple and eat them, it would certainly spike your insulin. If you cut the apple in pieces and let it sit (a way I see apples sold in the supermaket), the fructose separates and you do get the insulin spike.

I understand this to be true of most fruit. From raw to ripe to rotten.

Is there research on this?

I have read that fructose is primarily stored in the liver, can be good to have the liver filled with nutrients.
However i have also read that it draws in and turns itself into fat which then sits in the liver and can cause all sorts of problems with metabolizing fat enzymes among other issues.
There are thousands of no fructose advocates who have lost a ton of weight by just ditching fruit.
Ultimately it is about what your body can handle, some of my mates eat sugar all day and have good blood work results etc

Not discrediting the statement but RD’s are notorious for being ‘behind the curve’.

Mid 20s
As I was saying it’s based on your body
Plus gear changes everything

I very much consider fruit sugar to be as worthy of restriction as other types of sugar.

I’d never call it ‘bad’, but then I’d never call any foodstuff ‘bad’.

I used to say “of course there is bad foods…” however, funny thing, there is no bad “food”, only bad “food products”

What’s going on in your body in your mid 20s is no indicator of what age is going to do to you.
By their 30s most of your mates will be pudgy.
By their 40s most will be fat.
Sugar didn’t start affecting me till 33 or so, before that I paid no attention to it. Now I have to avoid it or put on fat.
