I am compelled to state that while maybe there shouldn’t be, there is a difference in those two terms. “Honkey” does not carry nearly the denigrating derogatory weight that “nigger” does. My church is full of black people that I would never in one million years address by that term, even in the most frivolous of jesting. Not because of their attitude, but because of mine. I can envision scenarios where they might call me “honkey” with no harm done.
I confess that I have never actually thought this through on this level before so I’m not even sure at the moment how right or wrong that is, but that IS how it is. For the record I have never even once heard them refer to each other that way either.

Exactly! There’s a HYUGE difference in these two terms, as the entire intelligent world seems to know. Only on a very technical, theoretical level can you even compare the two. I grew up in a school system that was about a 50/50 mix on white and black students. I had many friends and played on teams with kids who are black, and we threw around “honkey” all the time; never did we drop the “N bomb”. Why? cuz it was the fucking “N bomb”, and it was different.
Few words in any language can match “nigger” for connotations of hate, fear, racism, and murder. Add violence, cruelty and ugliness, and you start to get the idea.
