I haven’t notice it to be the case that Russians have hard times with he/she, nor do I see a reason that it should be the case. Russian has distinct words for he and she. Russians have problems with articles because there are none in Russian.
Chinese people have problems with he/she as he and she are pronounced the exact same in Mandarin. In Mandarin, him and her and his and hers are also the same word with just different order and a particle word added in in some cases.
Articles are something I realised that I took for granted bc English is one of my first languages
Something I’m really glad English doesn’t have are the “article modifiers” that change depending on the type of noun
For example “a dog” isn’t “一个狗”, it’s “一条狗” but a cow or horse uses “一匹” and pig and sheep use “一头”
I was taught that those are more “counting words” than articles since you can have 一条狗 or 两条狗 or 三条狗 etc. But my Mandarin is pretty rough, so I may be completely off. Either way, I agree that it’s needlessly complex that the counting particle changes for different nouns.
It would be nice if there was more logic to it (e.g., non-human animals all get the same one, all plants get the same one…)
Although to be fair, English also has them to some extent.
“head of cabbage”
“gaggle of geese”
“murder of crows”
Those are just collective nouns. I can easily talk about crows or geese without using them by saying a pair of crows or three geese. I don’t need the collective nouns. Most native English speakers see them as novelties and jokes, not serious pieces of the language.
A head of cabbage is just acknowledging that cabbage comes in bunches. It’s not a cabbage specific word so much as a word for a round clump of something that sticks out. In this case, it’s made of cabbage.
Has anyone seen the part of the video from Cincinnati where the old white guy struts into the circle of young black guys and slaps one of them across the face?
I codemn violence in the streets, unfair fights, kicking guys while they’re down and race based violence.
But, in theory, the council woman in Cinncinati may have been regerring to that part of the incident.
I saw the clip on TV. This is the first video including the slap that popped up when I searched. I justvwatched the video for a second. I don’t know what spin (if any) the story puts on it.
Poor Cinncinati, what a bad waybto be in the news.
