Things That Piss You Off

In this case it’s someone driving slow in the left lane.

An old man doing circuit training with a 5min break between circuits, on 1 of 4 smith machines, at 5am, at planet fitness, for a total of 30 minutes. That’s what apparently happened.

I certainly don’t think think that is simply shit. And if you think that’s anything beyond mildly annoying, you might be contributing to “toxic gym culture”.

You might want to reread the original post because you’re way off.

Damnit, we need Joey Swole to lay down the law on this!

To the Swole Signal!

Hair dryers should be banned from locker rooms.

My point, and perhaps I am wrong, is that he should have done his three sets of BP and done his rows and pushups somewhere else because, the other three machines were occupied and there were three people waiting.

It’s no different than curling in a power rack.

Additionally, you should not circuit train in a crowded gym as you tie up three or four machines.

Unless there is a designated area in the gym for circuit training - like at Planet Fitness.

Gave myself a witches kiss after working out today.

I confess I do this, but worse. When I have a workout, I park in a squat rack and do my squats and barbell accessories, which takes minimum 40min

With that said, I’m shorter than all the men and women using similar weight as me

I understand your annoyance. Truly, I do. It sucks to have to wait for equipment you want… especially if you think you’ll put the machine to better use. My issue was with the folks piling on about him being clueless and a newb/ignorant about why he wasn’t getting swole gainz bro. Not everyone pursues the same goals in the gym (especially older folks), and that should be OK. Especially at a place like PF…this isn’t a hardcore BB or PL gym we are talking about.

Also, if you are circuit training on a single piece of equipment, is that really inconveniencing others? Is that really any different than hogging a rack to run SS on it for the next 40+ minutes?

Thanks for the clarification.

If it is in a crowded gym and you are using a popular piece of equipment for an alternate exercise that could be done elsewhere, and that extends the time the piece of equipment is unavailable to others for its intended purpose, then yeah, I think it is inconveniencing others.

There are nuances to this discussion and I understand this. I lift at PF when I am on the road. My regular gym has eight power racks.

In this particular instance, the “offender” was not powerlifting, not even lifting heavy, and could have easily done his three sets of close grip BP and moved on.

I am doing SS and do hog the rack for thirty minutes or so as working at my TM warrants three minutes of recovery. I also am conscious of others waiting and will offer to have them work in, and will even give up a rack between exercises if it is exceptionally busy.

To avoid inconveniencing others, I try to go at the least busy time of the day - I guess 5:30AM is the wrong time at this particular gym.

So I do think I might be overly sensitive to the inefficiency of some of my fellow lifters, but it does piss me off

Thread title checks out.

I think we are all overly sensitive in the early more when pressed for time lol.

He is out of the Navy now. He might still be paying on the first two.

I figured I would outsmart everybody so I got to the gym at 4AM this morning. About 4:30 slow poke showed up, guess he was thinking the same thing. Because I am OCD, I timed him - took him twenty minutes of screwing around to do his first set on the Smith machine.

There was another open machine, and he did get there earlier, so I guess I am the asshole.

Neither of you are assholes. My opinion, based on the limited info I have, is that he probably has a lot of time on his hands. He doesn’t have any pressure to get into the gym, get a good workout in, and then go to work or something. He also doesn’t seem to have a plan or real purpose in mind. If he had a person to workout with or a trainer, maybe he would be more focused and have an idea of what he’s trying to achieve. Some people think that just showing up is 80 or 90% of success. They even make motivational posters stating as much. The truth is that success is measured by results. That’s probably why he is frustrating for you to watch. You have results in mind and he’s just showing up. In some way he’s the Pareto Principal in action and he represents all of those people we all encounter in life who just show up while we do the work. I don’t know, maybe I’m just rambling. But you aren’t an asshole.

My wife and many others would disagree. I do recognize you are referencing this issue only. Is this detente?

I do get triggered by people that don’t train in a manner that I feel is proper. Usually it is fat people doing calf raises or glute raises rather than squats or deadlifts. I have put a lot of effort into learning how to lift and eat and I get frustrated watching people waste their time - and mine by hogging the squat rack.

In his defense, I think he showed up earlier today to avoid the crowd. Same as me. So, their is some commonality.

If you want to think of it like that. I’ll just say this, and it relates to the thread title: cancer sucks and life is too short to be an asshole.

Worse are people that do look good but still train improperly

When you go to a negotiation and your first offer, which you think is really aggressive, receives a much warmer response than expected and you leave thinking you left a lot on the table. Goddamnit.

Also, the amount of pollen evergreen trees put out pisses me off. Same with cottonwood trees and their fucking cotton.
