Jack in the Box’s appeal isn’t so much 1 particular food item (although the Tacos and the Milkshakes are amazing) but more the spirit of Jack in the Box. It’s essentially the libertarian restaurant, where the free market decides what is going to be on the menu and there are no bad ideas or conventions.
Sweet and sour wanton nachos? F**k it, put it on the menu and see who orders it. You want a cheeseburger, rice bowl, pancakes and an ice cream sundae at 0400 on a Tuesday? We got you covered.
As a San Diego native, I take more pride in Jack in the Box than I do In n Out.
But you are right that Carls Jr is amazing. Hardees on the other hand is the inbred cousin of Carls Jr.
No joke; did you tell her that she’s going to feel hungry while she loses weight? It seems to be something people don’t understand.
I had a co-worker and friend of mine that was in the process of losing weight, and had actually done pretty good for himself. But one day he sat me down and was like “You take good care of yourself, I gotta know; what is it that you eat that keeps you from being hungry all the time?”
I looked at him blankly for a few seconds before replying “Dude, I AM hungry all the time. I’m always hungry. If I’m not hungry, it means I’m fat”
And suddenly the world opened up for him. It was like he needed permission to feel hungry. Once he realized that OTHER people also felt miserable while losing/maintaining weight, he was ready to take on the challenge.
People seem to think you can achieve things without suffering.
I had a similar conversation with one of my coworkers. They asked about my diet and I told them some of the details, after which they asked “but aren’t you hungry?”
Of course I’m fucking hungry! That’s the whole point.
This is the type of nuance one misses out with limited to no access to the good. As an aside, wouldn’t that be cultural appropriation for an East coaster to want to have a Jack in the Box (haha)?
I’ll be in SD for a couple days next month - any suggestions of where to eat/sites to see?
I experienced what-a-burger when i was in Florida - I liked it but preferred Hardees.
FYI - in New England … in my area of it anyways - none of these exist. We just recently got a Chick-Fil-A about 6 months ago … and it’s about 25 miles away. We have a bunch of Wendy’s, McD, and BK. Some Five Guys…
Love five guys. I’d pick it over pretty much any of the fast food places.
I like Wataburger for the simple fact that they have more meat in their burgers compared to the close fast food places in slight walking distance of my house. Mainly Taco Bell, MD, Jack in the box, Wendy’s, etc. I like Chick Fil A for their soups, but Subway takes the cake in terms of me trying to find something in a moderate calorie range with acceptable mounts of protein.
I rank Hardees behind Carl’s Jr. and I rank Carl’s Jr., behind Raising Canes.
Those are starting to pop up here in California. One just opened down the street, but I’d rather save $5 per meal and drive the extra half mile to go to the Habit Burger.
I loved In n Out growing up, and I have some fond memories of it, but ultimately, it’s just a cheeseburger. It’s a very good cheeseburger, but still just a cheeseburger. Jack in the Box’s origins are actually San Diego proper, whereas I’m not sure where specifically In n Out comes from in CA, so that is part of it as well.
@polo77j I’m a homebody and a non-drinker, so I can’t really speak to good night spots/places to eat. I tend to just hit up local taco shops for legit Mexican food when I’m home. However, for entertainment, Mission Beach is the best beach to go to in San Diego in my opinion. Great community, good parking, lots of cool shops. Seaport village is fun to walk around, though it’s a bit touristy. Oldtown has good food and fun history stuff.
Thanks for the reply. My wife and I aren’t much for partying - we have some decent Mex food but nothing like I remember from Cali - I lived in Lancaster until I was 12.
We’ll most likely hit up your other recommendations. Thanks!
