Things That Piss You Off

Yeah I am sure, they did every battery of test and culture known on me and didn’t find any infections.

Getting better. Hopefully I will go home tomorrow if my lypase enzyme number goes down again.

Just joking dude. Heard there’s sone virus going around.

Saw this on Facebook today:

Social distancing isn’t “people being paranoid” (that’s you, toilet paper hoarder). It’s protecting people that could die from the virus. While most of us will be 10,000% fine after getting the virus, there are people who are decidedly higher risk of being very much not fine.

-the elderly
-people with diabetes
-people with heart conditions
-people with respiratory issues
-people with cancer
-people with high blood pressure

I can’t help but think about how all but two of those are mostly preventable (and I still think cancer risk increases with bad food choices) Yes, I acknowledge that some people have bad luck or genetics, but 2/3 of Americans (the number of overweight/obese folks) don’t fall into those categories. These things are self inflicted by lifestyle choices.

If an alcoholic has liver failure then it’s his fault. If a fat person has any of the above ailments then it’s not their fault. They get a pill, a slew of big is beautiful nonsense, and a pat on the back.

Maybe if we cared about health all the time then we’d be better equipped to fight a darn virus. :man_shrugging:

I’m one of those people who are probably “underreacting” to this whole shebang. Maybe it’s because some young healthy dude who’s YT channel I’ve followed got cancer, went through surgery, chemo, radiation etc. and is now on hospice care with his face getting eaten through. 30ish, beautiful wife, two super cute kids, world ahead of him.

And we’re (I’m talking about those of us not in the “high risk” groups) frickin’ panicking over catching the frickin’ flu??? Not to mention, except for the “social distancing” (new PC age term for panicking lol), if you don’t already practice the recommended “precautions”, it means you’ve never been taught basic hygienic practice.

We lost an officer last year to pancreatic cancer. He was the picture of health - fit, good weight, didn’t drink or smoke. He was a super nice guy and handled it like a champ. Seems like the bad people of the world have all the good luck.

I’m more worried about the economy. Call me crazy, but I feel like the big shots are playing games for profit and it’s going to crush the small business sector.

There could be a huge ripple effect from this. Hourly workers won’t get paid due to being sent home. Debts will go unpaid. Banks will struggle. Property taxes will be underpaid which leaves local government under funded and the cuts will continue. This could get ugly in a hurry.

Since GW handed the reins of this country’s fiscal policy to Henry Paulson during the financial crisis of 2008, Goldman Sachs has basically run this country’s financial system. Mnuchin is ex-GS in case anyone didn’t know.

You can bet your bottom dollar that the “circle of trust” on Wall Street knew about the stimulus/rescue package before it was announced.

And the big banks will be fine, as long as they didn’t piss off any ex-GS CEOs.

Everyone at the top is profiting. There’s no “being fine”. They’re going to thrive.

Think of it this way, the stats are grouped into people who die, people who go to hospital (and live), the rest (ie “mild” symptoms)

The rest have been described as ranging from zero symptoms to full blown pneumonia and I have yet to see how this impacts the different demographics and people with risk factors.

I have had flu in the last two years, I’ve also had pneumonia (thanks kids) which didn’t land me in hospital. I would be put into the mild category in these were from corona virus. These were awful illnesses and it took a good month to six weeks to get over all of it.

I’m not likely to die but I also don’t want that shit again either.

My wife got the flu a couple years ago and then caught pneumonia on the back side of it. It was bad.

I just don’t understand how that’s business as usual but this virus is sending us towards Marshall law and travel restrictions.

I am really hoping you are including “being elderly” as something preventable, haha.

Well, there are definitely different versions of it.

And technically, dying young prevents being elderly so I guess it’s preventable. I wouldn’t call it optimal, though.

Efficient though.

We have all sorts of protocols in place to deal with the flu, including flu vaccines which do genuinely help keep numbers lower, and there’s just a ton of knowledge about the virus in general. This is something new - people might be overreacting as they always do, but it’s okay to slow down the process whereby everybody gets infected and smooth it out instead of swathes of people overcrowding all the hospitals and using up all the medication. Martial law is unlikely, but when things DO start getting shut down and regulated, people tend to panic.

And cost effective

This virus is more dangerous than the flu. A possible complication of the flu is pneumonia, but the symptoms are fever, cough, aches, etc. This virus directly attacks the lungs, and pneumonia is a symptom.

The danger comes from how dangerous pneumonia is, and how quickly it can turn serious.

It has a wider range of symptoms though - and the possibility of no symptoms is a key factor in what makes this virus so dangerous - tracking it’s spread is virtually impossible. We get pings on the map from time to time, but the actual number of people who are/have been infected are probably staggering.

One of my mom’s cancer pills cost $15,000. One. Fucking. Pill.

The not-so-glorious part of the free market economy and shady insurance companies

As an update to earlier:

Came home from the hospital yesterday and feel pretty good today. Body is definitely still healing as I am moving a bit slower and can’t do quite as much as I normally would in a day. I am on the mend though.

That’s good.

Days in a hospital are worse on me than long car rides. Aside from what you’re there for, there’s just that creaky tight sedentary feeling that is hard to shake.
