The World's 10 Greatest Athletes

My fantasy team would be Bo Jackson and Michael Jordan and I’d destroy all comers.

  1. Agreed. Add Ken Griffey Jr. in his prime (before he broke both wrists and all the pulled hamstrings and groins), and Wayne Gretzky and we can go looking for the fifth element.

  2. Similarly to this thread:
    USATODAY.com

  3. I know it’s a little different, but how can two sprinters be on there and not Michael Phelps? He dominates virtually every race in the water. 6 Golds at the Olympics in 2004, and as for staying power:

At the 2007 Worlds, Phelps won 7 gold medals, tying the record, and broke 5 world records.

Look out Beijing.

I watched a televisin show on the TV about Jim Brown. It said he was playing games with broken ribs, and broken feet and broken other stuff all the time. That guy is one tough motherfucker.
The real greatest athlete of all time

swimming is a relatively new thing imo, in terms of coverage. So the competetion is still not that great. Also new technology is allowing for swimmers right now to take advantage of that. Also this was based more on athletic ability, strength, speed, endurance, reaction time, skill and success ext. He has good endurance and speed and of course success but thats about it.

Your right though those other two runners should not really be on there.

I actually think Tiger Woods should be on that list!

I agree that golf does not exactly qualify as a sport! however He is head and shoulders above everyone as far as his play and his fitness levels are concerned!

He trains very hard look back at when he won his first pro even he looked like a twig hes build a good physique definally after adding near on 50lb’s of muscle!

I’m not really for or against tiger. but since when is putting on muscle qualify you as an athlete. T-Nation members should all be greatest athletes then.
Good Point!

Olympic lifters are powerful, but how many of them you think could run a 400 and a decent speed. Thats lets then 1 minute running, how many events can you win with that kind of conditioning. Then what do they have to react to? Mano y mano if somebody is competing at the moment against them how can their timing be tested?
Because it’s not the purpose of a power lifter, you idiot?
Let’s compare lebron james with an ultra marathoner and see who can run further.

Sir Steven Redgrave.

What is it, 5 olympic gold medals???

And the guy ‘abuses’ insulin too. Gotta love it.
whats ridiculous is that he did it in 5 back to back olympics, thats quite a career.

Yeah that’s pretty amazing.

How about Tony Hawk? Not a “traditional” athlete but certainly was at (I don’t know if he still is? Don’t follow so much anymore…) the top of his sport for a long time. X-Games aren’t so far off the big 3 in terms of moneymaking so there’s plenty of talent to compete against.

Obviously not the same level of size/power as other sports, but definitely gotta give him some props.

You got it all wrong with your picks, the list was made to answer this question…

“If Earth had to send one man to the Intergalactic Olympics, who should go?”

If the goal of going was winning then tiger woods and Tony Hawk have no business in the top 10. What Olympic event would they have a good chance of winning, seriously that is out of the question.

Dude, calm down.

Where in there do I say he’s one of the top 10 athletes ever? Somebody made a comment about an athlete who dominated their sport for a long time. I responded by agreeing and adding another.

That’s it man, settle down.

I apologize if it sounded like i was angry or something, i really wasn’t.

Just stating that if Tiger Woods and LeBron James were to go to the Olympics and i had to put money on someone, LeBron gets my wallet.

On the other hand, Tiger is a beast at what he does, and deserves props no doubt…

How is swimming a new thing??? has been at every modern olympics. The act is as old as man and water. The competition is extremely high, its the ‘athletics’ of the first week of the games.

As for the swim suits, name one sport that doesn’t use similar stuff? Swimming was one of the last sports to let technology in etc.

The list also clearly has a bias towards US athletes and power sports. So even though swimmers aren’t all enduro, it probably didn’t help. A genuine list of athletes, not power-athletes would feature, rowers, cyclists, endurance athletes and a variety of others.

I’m not American, nor am I an endurance fan (if anything the opposite) but I’m amazed at the lack of respect Lance Armstrong gets in these debates. To suggest that ANY footballer, baseballer or basketballer is or was a better ATHLETE than Armstrong is insane.

A criteria I like to use when watching pro athletes (ie rugby players) is to see how much they dominate when they drop back to amateur or club competition (much more common in Australia) and when talking about athletes, those who do it easy. For example, Michael Johnson hardly ever got out of 2nd gear and dominated, Ian Thorpe was the same. If he ever ‘put in’ (rare for Thorpe) he would smash a world record.
