The Wire is the Greatest TV Series

Still the season with the kids from start to finish. Who writes a character like Dookie & Bubbles? Them bastardes pulled me in and at times had me yelling at the tv.
Honestly, guys that have met people like that. Simon was a crime reporter, and the other dude was a cop, then a teacher. There’s people like that out there in the streets, but no Hollywood type would be able to capture that because they just wouldn’t get it.

And I agree…Bubbles is one of the great underrated characters on that show. the only one who actually comes away “winning” per se.

The Wire is literally the greatest TV show ever, and about as close as you can come to a novel in TV form. Every season was incredible- and last one about the newspapers, which hits close to home, was DEAD ON.

The first couple years of the Sopranos were great- the last three were absolutely awful, and anticlimactic in every possible way.

Only an idiot would ever say that the Sopranos was a better series- it lacked the writing and the overall intelligence of the Wire in a big way. What show do you really need bullets flying in all the time just to keep the morons sated?

You must be intelligent to watch The Wire. This eliminated 98 percent of the population, and so it was never as big as the Sopranos. But it was still far better… and Treme, that shows incredible too.
The irony in this post is absolutely hilarious! As you prefer The Wire, and thus must be an intelligent fellow, I will let you work it out for yourself.

I didn’t like the first two seasons because people were dying, I liked it because they were original. During the last three seasons, the writing, aside from one or two episodes, was awful, and the story wandered and got lost constantly.

The only reason I even referenced the killings was everyone complained about the lack of them it all the time

Judging from this sentence, no, I don’t.

Gotta luv Baltimore! They actually DOWNPLAYED shit for TV compared to some of the shit I saw/went through growing up there. Greenmount and 33rd in the '80’s was OFF THE FUCKING CHAIN. Hampden (Falls and 36th) wasn’t much better. Most of the friends I had from the neighborhood are either dead or in jail.

It hasn’t gotten much better. My Cousin is currently a Baltimore City Cop. Some of the shit he tells me that doesn’t make the news puts the Wire to shame.
Gotta agree it was toned down. I grew up around Memorial Stadium, so I knew Greenmount and 33rd very well. And don’t forget about Old York Rd. I went to Poly and played football so half the white guys on the team lived in Hampden, so I did my time around there, too - during the day because you know how it got at night.
Yeah, it would have been pretty fucked up had you been there at night - sad but true. I moved to Hampden from Abel Avenue (near the stadium) when I was in Middle School - went to Robert Pool and then went to Poly. I own two houses there now that I rent out right off of “The Avenue” LOL (hon).

Do you remember Bella Roma Pizza? (the old one at Keswick and 36th? Across from the Royal Farms?) Best pizza in the world (IMHO). You’re bringin’ me back Lew!
Hell yeah! Had to get some pizza and a sub there after practice and home games. LOL
What year did you come out of Poly? I’m class of 88

Just started watching this show today and I love it already. The authenticity is second to none.

Great points. I agree completely. Season 4 really got me, possibly because I work with kids, but they were all great.

How did you feel about Omar’s demise? Although I was pretty upset about it, like, seriously angry, I thought it was cool that he was the only person in the entire series to really best Marlo.

He destroyed his name and then got killed, so Marlo looked like a bitch who was hiding and was never able to erase that stain. Nice, but, just on a mob mentality level, I would have preferred Marlo to go the way of Stringer Bell.

Also agree that Bubs was one of the most incredible, endearing characters I’ve ever watched on TV. I cried a few times during Season 4 and 5 watching his story.

And Bunk needs to do standup. For real.

Should have been class of '92, but I didn’t graduate… I left home at 16 and ended up in Hagerstown, then down to the Cut. I’m doing ok now though. I still go up there every few months or so to visit with family.

Kerley, why dont you start a thread called “The Sopranos is the Greatest TV Series”? Its not even close. Its boring, fat, guidos that sit around eating Deli Meats. I watched about half of a season on DVD and was completely disinterested.

How about you suck my balls.
Well thought out.

If you are a fan of The Wire, as you claim, why would you spend so much time looking for conflict by bringing up the Sopranos?

Just admit that those valour wearing goombas aren’t nearly as cool as Stringer Bell, and we can all get back to discussing a great show.
Kerley wrote:
you poor misguided fool, The Sopranos is the Greatest TV Series that has ever been or ever will be.
Sopranos was good but didn’t have nearly the character development and depth of plot that the Wire created. In the Sopranos, all characters orbited around Tony. The wire had no such “sun”, just a plot/story that over the seasons continued to develop and entangle itself in other areas in unexpected ways with no character being greater than any other. Kill Tony, the series is over…and they ended it leaving just that issue up in the air. Kill Stringer, Omar, Avon, any cop, the mayor, the Greeks, dock workers, any corner boy, any character at all, and the show does not miss a single beat…not even half a beat.

And therein sir, lies the difference between the two that ultimately gives the Wire a critical edge.

I guess I’m the only one who thinks the whole season with the docks sucked ass, I kept falling asleep. I didn’t like the very last episode either I think they could’ve went another season or two with the wire. End it with the kid who killed omar dying
i ended up really liking frank sabatca and season 2. it didnt have the main suspects in it really, but it came full circle when marlo wanted to get in touch with the greek. i think they ended it alright, doogie becoming the next bubbles and everything going full circle.

i think it takes stones to cancel a show before its lost its legs, you dont want to keep drawing it out and forcing plot lines and dialog
I too felt season 2 was the weakest until I watched it again (my cable was off and I had the DVDs). It will definitely grow on you. I no longer feel its the weakest season.

i don’t know exactly why, i can’t really put my finger on it, i just enjoyed it better, i could re-watch the sopranos 100 times, but i don’t think i could re-watch the wire. ( i have all seasons of both on box set so i could re-watch them) am not trying to cause conflict but i thought the last season of the wire got kinda stupid with mcnulty running around faking murders and shit like that.
