You also can’t use Mongoloid or Oriental. Not using Oriental is silly as it merely means eastern. Meanwhile we can still use Occidental. In Europe they still use those terms however.

I also don’t consider Obama to be black, since his mother is white. We use the term ‘‘mulato’’ for a half-white/half-black individual here but I think you can’t use that term either in the US, not anymore.

I’ve heard hispanic people, including ones with indigenous background, call themselves “brown” for some reason.

I think it’s mostly Americans who call them that since you’ll find plenty of people with African, European, or Asian heritage in the Americas, people who have little to no indigenous background.
People like Pelé, Bolsonaro, Fujimori. The current pope would probably be an ‘‘Italian’’ guy if his parents had chosen to immigrate to the US instead of Argentina.

Maybe they do it out of ignorance, maybe they just find it simpler if a whole continent is just one color.
