The Truth About Protein Bars?

For the most part they are all crap and as other have said glorified candy bars. Avoiding all hydrogenated oils (yes even those little bits) is a proper strategy for long term cardiovascular and brain health. If it was a finibar or a snickers, I’ll take the finibar but other wise they all suck (and working in the industry I understand why–its hard as hell to get the right consistency, mouth-feel, taste, texture, etc. without the crap additives).

You could make a perfect bar but it would probably come out to about 7 or 8 bucks a bar and people want to believe they can pay cheap prices for good ingredients.

Bars should only be eaten if you don’t have a lot of good whole meal options. One example- traveling.

Quest bars appear to be the best in the market (no, I don’t sell them) . Head to head, there are better than any other bar

Ive never even seen those so thanks for posting, yeah ingredient wise they look about better than just about anything Ive seen on the market.

HYDROLIZED GELATIN

I have a sweet tooth, so when I’m jonesing I have a EAS Carb Conscious chocolate chip bar.
Really, it’s candy bar. I’m buddies with the guy who owns the local GNC, he said what others have said about the Quest bar, I buy them for my wife for when she can’t get lunch or a snack.

Those Quest bars sound good. I haven’t seen them in Australia. Shipping from the US usually is a killer.

Just because the label says 5g of “sugar” or “carbs” doesnt mean anything. They dont count Sugar Alchohols, they DONT count Maltodextrin as a “sugar” for some reason.

Most protein bars are loaded with shit. I was in a pinch one day and found this out the hard way. Soy Proteins, Sugar Alcohols, Sugar, Collagen protein sources (ground up horse hooves)

Honestly, I’m not shilling here, Biotest makes one of the only good protein bars on the market… BUT, they should be treated as convenience, or a special treat, and NOT part of your daily routine. Its still basically a chocolate bar.
AWESOME info about the horse hooves…isn’t collagen the “protein” they put into those little protein shots?

Use oatmeal and nuts to make granola, then mix with peanut butter, whey powder. Put in the freezer. Eat an hour later.
Could you give the exact specifications to make this

These are the ingredients of my favourite protein bar. Yes, its high in sugar, but its more of a post workout treat I occasionally might have once or twice a week. It has 24 grams of protein and 23 grams of sugar

Ingredients: Protein Blend (Whey Protein Concentrate, Soy Protein Isolate, Whey Protein Isolate), Wheat Flour, Sucrose, Milk Compound Chocolate, (Sucrose, Vegetable Oil, Cocoa, Emulsifier,(322,435,471,475,476,) Natural Colour, (160a), Flavour), Whole Egg, Glycerine, Polydextrose, Milk Solids Non Fat, Brown Sugar Dried Apricots, (Apricots, Rice Flour, Preservative (220) Paw Paw, Almonds, Flavours, Maize Starch, Raising Agent (500), Tapioca Starch, Salt, Glutamine Peptides, L-Leucine, L-Isoleucine, L-Valine, Preservatives (202,282). Contains Dairy, Soy and Wheat. May contain traces of peanuts and other nuts.

What are my fellow T-Nation members thought on this bar?

Whey protein is the no.1 ingredient… does this make it a “better” or “acceptable” protein bar?

The wheat flour and soy protein are objectionable.
