Me too, glad you kept your cool and remember the training.
When I was working the street, I noticed this as well, that’s why you always need an EMT /Paramedic those first critical minutes.
Thanks for the post. interesting point on the 24 hour rule, don’t be a stranger.
Damn straight there, brother, good information.
Thought for the day: I think this follows along with the current discussion.

Yesterday’s work and skills:
I had access to a decent obstacle course. Did several runs and found out my rope climbing skills have deteriorated. got to work on that.
Question of the day:
Two years, brother? Great question and thanks for posting.
Sentinel should be required reading for anyone wanting to become better prepared to protect your family.
Look, don’t be a stranger.
I did the latter maneuver from standing. I just tried to punch up into the diaphragm with a lot of force. I was more concerned with stopping the choking than breaking a rib, but luckily no ribs were broken either.
24 hr rule only applies to “safe” summer outings or folks who are prepared and know their shit in the winter.
Safe outings would be hiking, backpacking, floating a mellow river, etc. Something with a remote chance of traumatic injury. When riding bikes or scrambling/peak bagging I usually take a partner who can get help there within a few hours. But at the end of the day, you gotta be comfortable with the risks if you are way out there. Even if you contact the right people immediately, help ain’t arriving for hours so mitigate risks as you see fit. Young and single? Go get rowdy. Married with kids, probly need to adjust your risk tolerance.
In winter, I’ll go on longer ski tours (always with partners) and there is always the chance we have to bivy overnight. Snow camping fucking sucks, but with a little common sense it’s nothing more than uncomfortable/a little miserable. If you get turned around, or your exit has unexpectedly shitty Avi conditions the smart choice is to take the long safe route out even of that means backtracking 6 hours at 5pm… Hence the overnight bivy and not having SAR called because you will have self evaced at 9am the next day.
I live in an earthquake prone area and my emergency food is rice and protein powder. Don’t see the need for anything else. It’s a damn emergency, I don’t have to like it, it’s purely fuel to keep me and family going. Always keep a half tank+ of gas in the 4runner and I can pretty much get wherever I need. IMO you just need to survive the first few days of a natural disaster (with a remote chance of happening)… You don’t need to survive in style.
This happened in my backyard. People I know saw it and the victim was well known by some of my friends. My son was acquainted with the murderer. He will have a very rough time in prison.
Nobody deserves to get murdered but this was 100 percent avoidable. The article didn’t mention that the guy who was shot approached and punched the guy in the face first. That by no means justified lethal force as the victim was walking away, but it is a lesson in the unpredictability of conflict escalation.
Mind your own business while out and about. Insults only have power over your actions if you let them. Keep your bouncer face on and move on with your life.
Good information, thanks. Living in an area prone to earthquakes and probably a good chance of wildfires, you are ahead of the game. It never ceases to amaze me how many people simply don’t keep adequate fuel in their vehicles. I know an individual who only refuels when the fuel light comes on. WTF?
LoL. Nice, reminds me of our current politicians.
Thanks for posting this, lots of lessons here, especially the ability to control yourself on the street. We fight when there is no other choice, not when we want to.
Thought for the day:
Timid men prefer the calm of despotism to the tempestuous seas of liberty. Thomas Jefferson.
Yesterday’s work and Skills:
8 rounds heavy bag
5 rounds speed bag
3 rounds light sparring
5 rounds traditional TKD and Kali katas
Krav Maga training
Question of the day: Some eye candy to share.
Do you have a EDC knife?
Flash flooding. Engine fire. Highway pileup. Just a few of the many emergencies in which a person would need to be extricated from a vehicle before it’s too late. But what if the doors are jammed? What if the windows don’t work? It’s time to smash the glass.

Spyderco Delica with “Emerson Wave” opener. No glass breaker, but I really like this knife! Some think of the emerson opener as hokey, but it works well for me. This thing deploys quick.
Thought for the day:

Yesterday’s Work:
Limited range workout:
cinder block and ice chest carries.
tire carries and tire throws.
sledge hammer throws.
pushups and band punches.
Skills:
Train with different weapons
When I am in the states, I try at least once a month to train with weapons I never carry on the job. This is based on experience in third world countries, where, sometimes the only thing available is local weapons. Find yourself in the Middle East or Central Asia and its US, Russian, Chinese and British weapons, in Central and South America, its US, Russian, and European war vintage.
I don’t have an extensive collection of different firearms, but, I have one of about every action made, except a bull pup design. Yesterday, I took a 30-30-lever action, a 1898 Mauser bolt, a Japanese Nambu, a Ruger 45LC single action revolver, a S&W model 686 with speed loaders and 1950’s Browning Hi-Power with a European magazine release to the range and worked through a series of simple drills to make sure, that it shit hit the fan and all I could pick up was something along these actions, then I would least know how to use and operate.
No matter your stance on firearms, you may be in a situation where you may have to pick a weapon off the ground or from a dead solider or bad guy, to defend yourself or family. Remote chance? of course it is, can it happen? Yes it can.
Question of the day:
Can you operate a: lever action rifle? Bolt action? Semi-auto or auto? Know how to load a revolver? How to change a magazine in a semi or full auto weapon? Pump action shotgun or rifle? Single shot bolt? Break top revolver? Load a single action? Don’t have to like something to familiarize yourself on how to use it. I hate I-Phones, but, know how to use one.
Well, as we were all talking about choking the other day, check out this video.
It’s amazing to me how nobody did a single thing! People were just watching, in shock. I know it’s a common occurrence, but it still blows my mind. Not even ringing an ambulance or calling for help. Well done that manager!
His girlfriend’s pats on the back were of no consequence either. I have a little girl who hates to chew her food, so you can be damn sure I know how to clear a blockage. This is the type of thing, in the civilian world, you’re more likely to see. Don’t be afraid of really hitting a choking person.
In Re: to Treco—>
“On a lighter note @s_afsoc, about 95% done, other than painting”
Niiiice!
That makes me wanna take a break and I’ve not even done anything!!
In RE: to other post about “upping training.” Yup, agree. I’ve let my certs run out for every damn thing BUT am actively searching local classes for the first aid/CPR certs so I can update that shit. Used to have confined space entry/rescue with SCBA as well, no need to redo that.
What I damn well may do though is take a field medic class given by a LE Institute in my state after handling the other stuff. I mean y not?! It is a brief course, I think only 3 days, so pretty damn basic…but would be a hella update for my old ass ![]()
We are talking about being prepared here right?
An aside: Amazon done managed to piss me off yesterday with delayed delivery of items for a new get home bag I’m working on for my car, partly inspired by the 73 yo man post here - Thx. I ain’t 73 but intend to be one day, dammit! The a-holes showed “by 9pm” all day, then “running late,” then “Aug 3-6” at 2130 after I’d been sitting out front sipping bourbon waiting to catch my packages so as to avoid boxes sitting on my porch overnight. Bunch of MoFo’s!!
Last item - any input on where to get the best price on chemlights? I can get ‘em about $1/ea from Sportsman’s guide. Anyone do better?? They’re just handy A.F. to have so I keep some around ![]()
Oh, my wife just shared this with me. She refuses to let me post it for some reason but thinks it is hilarious. Wat a damn tease!!
1957HRS EST: Just saw news about active shooter in El Paso. F’n A-hole! Damn I wish just once one of these clowns goin in some place with intent would run into an armed citizen and get stopped in their tracks, then that’s wat we’d see reported.
Dammit.
Found a place ![]()
Another place, ain’t affiliated, get nothing for posting link. Was looking for a SOB holster for my 1911 and found a place, thought I’d share cause they ain’t standard or easy to locate. When I get around to it I’m gonna try one of these people’s.
Bronco SOB Holster - Wright Leather Works® LLC
Gotta say it’s not my fav EDC mode, but it does have its place sometimes. Versatility with holsters is a desirable thing to have on hand after all …
