So 50, Game, Kanye, Lupe, Snoop, etc. are sub par just cuz they aren’t Pac or Big?
That’s what I thought, shut up.
(not you specifically, but all Lil’ Wayne haters)
50 is sub par.
Kanye’s production is waht sets him apart, not his rapping ability.
Lupe, I don’t know, we’ll see.
Snoop hasn’t put out anything that has come close to matching Doggystyle.
I’ll give you Jay-Z, but he has a lot of misses. He surrounds his one or two hits with a lot of filler on his albums. And his last two albums were big drop offs in quality.
Look, I have two main problems with current rap. First, it’s become more about production than lyricism. It’s all about a beat and a catchy hook.
For example, take Rich Boy’s Throw Some D’s. It’s got a great beat and good production, but Rich Boy doesn’t bring anything to the table with his raps. That’s why Kanye can release a remake that sounds just as good. Hell, Eli Porter could rap over that beat and it would be a hit.
Next, and this is my biggest problem, is that no one makes a fully listen-able album any more. I realize that this is not just the artist’s fault. In the age of iTunes, MySpace, and commercial jingles, it’s all about that one hit.
The artist needs to make that one hit single to be successful. I can’t even remember that last album released that I could listen to start to finish. Where’s the next Illmatic? Midnight Marauders? Reasonable Doubt? Where’s the next Chronic? (Yes, I am eagerly awaiting Detox, if it ever comes.)
So there. I don’t HATE Lil Wayne, I just don’t think he’s the second coming of a rapping Jesus Christ.[/quote]
